Hello, has anyone heard of a combat/trading space sim similar to Elited for the DS or maybe GBA?
    Commercial or homebrew?

I've already tried two homebrews for the GBA, one that looks to be an exact copy of the old original elite with a few minor upgrades (solid polygons) and one that is a port of Elite The New Kind. The controls were too touchy for my tatses in NK variant and the elite copy, making combat difficult. Plus the old Elite copy had strange controls and an odd way of access other options which made them not at all handy...

Could you point me towards those homebrews you found? I've been looking for a version of Elite on the NDS aswell and would like to give them a try.

Elite was great! It's a shame David Braben seems to have given up on the idea of ever making a new Elite.

http://code.google.com/p/ds-elite/ (This is the DS port, only the plain Elite port)

for one of them, and the other is on the same guy's home page (The New Kind release done by another guy).

http://geocities.com/quirky_2k1/ (You can get the GBA versions of both here...)

    [EDIT]
DS version locks up after hyperjump and something is the the scanner, so you may want to stick with the GBA versions until/unless the DS version gets updated again...

You have the only two versions I know of (for the record though it is the same person who did both).

I made a thread for these sort of games but focused on PC more.

This being said if you want trading and the like can I suggest the GBA game Sea Trader - Rise of Taipan (number around 0815-0830 depending one whose numbering you use)and only 32mbit.
