Sure they would if they want to surprise people with it. Its better if the hype starts right when the first pictures are leaked not if they mention it randomly in some interview. Nintendo didn't announce anything about the Wii until they were ready to reveal it. Obviously they were making a console after Gamecube but its not like they told everyone straight up exactly what the Wii would be like 2+ years before the console was out yet.Morgawr said:Usually when somebody says "no current plans" it means they aren't working on it.. so it means no actual current plan.
I doubt Sony would be so unprofessional to tell us "lolz, no plans for psp2 lolz" and then they just come out of the closet one day saying "lol here it is, psp2! xD we were joking lolz".. Also they wouldn't be denying if they were actually planning/working on it so... yeah, I think there won't be a psp2 anytime soon (maybe a different handheld console..)

DSi is hardly the successor to the DS, its a sister product as the GBA Micro is to the GBA/SP.monopoman said:You can argue for Nintendo Super Nintendo Nintendo 64 but basically they are all similar because of the company name. Playstation is not a company name...
It was labeled as the Sony Playstation, saying Playstation is just like saying NES or Super NES or N64.
QUOTE(monopoman @ Jan 26 2009, 12:41 PM) I also am reminded of rumors of a DS coming after DS Lite and people saying no no they won't make another one. Nintendo never gave official word but then low and behold months before a release date in Japan boom DSi came about. So really companies keeping things on the down low until they are ready is NOT a surprise at all.

Nintendo Gameboy (Color / Advance):
- Sega -> Game Gear -> Color and beter cpu, descent, but in no way a GB beater
- Atari Lynx -> Powerfull CPU and color, i would say descent, but FAIL
- Neo-Geo Pocket (color) -> fail (pitty of this)
- Bandai Wonderswan (color / swancrystal) -> fail
Super Nintendo / Sega Megadrive:
- Sega Megacd -> Fail
- Atari jaguar -> Fail
- 3DO -> Overpriced, Fail
- Amiga CD32 -> Descent, but +/- 100.000 pcs sold is not enough, Fail
- Philips CD-i -> Big Fail
- FM-Towns (only sold in Japan but failed in the end)
- Neo Geo AES, overpriced and targetted to the richer ppl, i would not say fail, but it didn't at competition to the others.
Playstation:
- Neo Geo CD (CDZ) -> Fail (due to crappy load times and overheating issues)
- Sega Saturn -> Fail
- N64 -> Descent, but Fail
It's not always, more, better powerfull that ownz it all. Historie has proven that.
Sony better lays an ear to the customer to know what we really want in a PSP2.
Obviously its not a successor its the next model of the regular DS with some new bells and whistles. I know a lot of people thought the Lite would be the final model. That the next thing would have been a REAL DS 2 that plays Nintendo DS 2 games.PettingZoo said:DSi is hardly the successor to the DS, its a sister product as the GBA Micro is to the GBA/SP.monopoman said:You can argue for Nintendo Super Nintendo Nintendo 64 but basically they are all similar because of the company name. You ever hear of secrets of industry? There is a reason why they keep stuff hidden and it has a lot of reasons to do with corporations stealing technology and ideas. Anyways its irrelevant what the next Sony hand held is called it might as well be PSP2. They have yet to change the name of the home console after 3 generations making it the longest running pure name ever.

The other big reason to keep it quiet is so Nintendo has no clue if one is coming or when. When your competing with others letting people know early means Nintendo might start planning the DS 2 (Hypothetical Name) a bit earlier then they thought.

Remember kids knowing is half the battle in industry and in life!
GI JOE!!!!!
Yeah that's why most companies won't even let you in the god damn building unless you work there. Try to go into Intel and take a look around good luck with that. The only way you get to see anything is on a tour and even that bypasses all the development rooms practically. Yes the whole I'm waiting for the next big thing is part of it but they do like to keep things secret period.IzzehO said:[Uhm.. wrong.. wrong... wrong.. and uhm... wrong. It has nothing to do with competition or stealing technology (lol? You think they need to steal technology when they basically implement 3rd party hardware and have a LEGION of engineers and IT people behind them?). And as for the rumours of the DS - I remember reading the first ones that spread some time in January last year. They claimed it was going to have a new everything and have 2 touch screens: cmon it was just something a child dreamed up and it remained that way for long enough that once it came - people connected the coincidences...
Onto the reason:
It's so very obvious to anyone who is even remotely interested in 'the industry'.. and for that matter 'in life'. If a company announced today that they would be releasing a NEW, SHINY and UPDATED product in 2 years time... what the hell do you think would happen to their old product? All those kids out there that spend a years worth of pocket money saving up for these things would say, 'HAH I'm not buying that.. I'll wait for the shiny, new thing because I'm not made of money'. No doubt the DSL has even suffered sales to the knowing of a US release of the DSi (even if it is just a gimmick, which many have seen through).
So instead of 'knowing', why not just use common sense?
