I've heard the dreamcast can play burnt games without a mod chip or anything.. How valid is that statement?

totally. most dreamcast iso's are self-booting. some of the older games required a boot disc tho.

The newer Dreamcast models don't read cd-r but they were made at the end of the Dreamcast's life cycle. Having one of those is pretty rare.

    Hold it!

Look at the bottom of your Dreamcast. Do you see a ? somewhere? If so, you're good to go!

If you see a ?, you can't play burnt dreamcast games as it is now!

I bought mine right at the end of the dreamcast's life cycle, but it does have ① on the bottom of it, so I'm good to go? Are there any sites you can recommend on what to do to get started? Or do I simply burn the image and pop it in?

Some isos require a patch for the DC to read them.
Use BootDreams to apply the patch and burn the game

Get yourself some eumlators here. Note that every console up to SNES works beautifully. SNES runs slowly but it's playable. It's a little bit faster when you turn off the sound.

Also, make sure the games are self-bootable, otherwise you'll need a boot-disc to play them.

The Dreamcast Gameshark works as a boot disc. You need a VMU attached to be able to use it.

hmm, there's no longer a d/l link on that site available. Anyone know of an alternate location for bootdreams?

I was able to find 1.05a from a torrent..but I can't find the newest version 1.60c anywhere. I don't have anything against 1.05a, but I'd like to try and find the newest version, too.
