Dragon Quest I-IX Playthrough

So I know it's a little late in the summer, but after making excuse after excuse about not playing Dragon Quest IX, I finally said to myself that I have to play all the other ones first. I don't care if they're not connected, I just have to do it.

So I went to wikipedia, and it turns out that like every game has been recreated a million times and they all have a bunch of really tiny details that have been changed. So I don't know which ones to play...

I know that I'm gonna play the ones on the DS (IV, V, VI, and IX), and Dragon Quest VII and VIII only came out on the Playstation, so what console should I play Dragon Quest I, II, and III? I'm trying to decide between the SNES and GBC versions... I'm pretty sure that the GBC version are better, but the SNES versions have better graphics and probably cleaner sound.

Are there any Dragon Quest fanatics out there who can help me decide?

Play the snes versions for sure, the GBA versions are WAY easier.
Not sure about dq III though
Or.. Wait, what?
Was it the snes version being easier? o.o
