Yes Windows XP requires activation and unlike newer windows will actually just lock you out after 30 days if you don't.
... I'm certain by now there are several workarounds for bypassing XP activation. If nothing else you can just skip installing the "Windows Genuine Advantage" update.

Yes there are methods I'm just not one to assist at all when it comes to stuff like that.

There are. If you don't mind some simple BIOS hacking, you can just add the SLP string of your OEM of choice, and use corresponding OEM installation media.

Otherwise google "Windows XP All Editions Universal Product Keys Collection". The VLK version doesn't require online activation.

It's best to use a volume license edition of Windows XP instead of the readily available retail/OEM editions, as they do not require internet/telephone activation and only the product key. Then, you can update with Legacy Update and so forth.
