2006 (basically 2007) launch means today we are now about as far from that as the SNES (1990-1992) was at the time.
What is retro is ever the fun topic though.

Oddly enough, no. Technically, everything up to Dreamcast is considered retro, then there's a shift where some people consider up to PS2/GC/Xbox retro while some others don't.
Does it predate the current gen? Then it's retro.
Is it currently available for retail sale with marketing and support? It's retro.
Did you play it as a kid? It's retro.
Christ... There's been 2 Nintendo consoles since it... So yeah.... Its retro!

I consider the Wii Retro because the Shop Channel has been discontinued, official support for the console is minimal to non existent and the only way to play first party games through the discs is to go through the trouble of paying hundreds of dollars for them or getting them through other means.
To me, what is retro is what you played (and loved) growing up. So yes, I would consider the Wii retro in your case.
I consider retro 2 generations ago. Either console wise or tv standards or hardware. I consider the PS3 retro because while they were HD they were mostly 720P and we are now in the 4k era. They used mechanical hard drives, we went to SSD then NMVE.
I would say the Wii is retro.
Video
The Wii produced video with the assumption that it would be run off a crt.
No digital output. The digital video signal from the wii gets converted to analog signal at the A/V port (this digital signal is able to be retrieved thru HDMI mods).
The deflicker filter and no option to turn it off (can be turned off on homebrew).
No HD resolution
No day one 1 updates or patches.
Games could run off the game disk itself. No need to install the game on the internal memory to help the game launch (like ps3/later 360 titles)
The wii had a single core cpu before we went to multiple cores

We call that “coping.”some others don't
I think the Wii is retro. I honestly think once a system reaches 10+ it should be considered “retro”
in the "scene" everything that is older than 10 years is considered "retro"; keep in mind that dumpers usually do not allow to share stuff newer than 10 years. So "retro" is not a "fixed" term, it evoleves during time.

"Retro/Vintage" is a social concept and not something objectively quantified with age. Much like with classic rock, classic Hollywood, or classical music, it encompasses a specific period of time and there should be a defined cutoff point where there's a big change. Anyone saying it's retro just because it's 20 years old is missing the point. If anything 20 years old is retro, then eventually retro gaming will encompass an extreme percentage of gaming's history spanning multiple generations of people. The idea of the NES being in the same conversation as the PS6 isn't even fathomable to me, but if we continue down this mindset, that's eventually what will happen, unless we start dividing it up into eras like art history.
I consider the Wii/360/PS3 retro, but only up to roughly November 2007. That's the cutoff point. Retro died with Super Mario Galaxy, and Modern began with Call of Duty 4. The release of Call of Duty 4, Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, and Crysis all in the same month, then Grand Theft Auto IV, the financial crisis, the rise of indies, the iPhone app store, and the decline of G4 the following year all marked the end of the "golden age" of gaming as we knew it: an extreme turning point where things were never the same.
