The sticky topic dates from 2006 so I figured I'd ask:

A friend of mine is buying me an R4i. What shortcomings should I expect from this card? Are any games incompatible with it?

Thank you for your time, have a virtual cookie:

Incompatabilities come from the cart and there are so many clones we won't really know until you tell us which one I suppose.
Expect an annoyed person though as he might wonder why he can't play so many games.

Get an acekard 2i, Dstwo or ORIGINAL/1:1 clone R4.
    So much better.

Too late. I asked him to get me an acekard 2i but he is hardheaded and ordered the R4i.

Damn it. Why wouldn't he just listen to me. I guess I'm fucked.

    I have a DSi btw.

Make him cancel the order and buy you an Acekard 2i. [IMG]

ok bud YOU ASKED FOR DRAW BACKS OF A R4!

the first draw back that i have encountered is the r4 will corrupt files randomly and at any random time.
sometimes it gets so bad that you have to reformat your r4 losing every thing.

i had that problem with my r4 ALOT

thats the big problem with r4s you might have to live with.

Sorry, but the R4i is possibly one of the worst carts out there.

If you can cancel the order, get an AceKard 2i. Cheap (about 16 bucks) and they are a dream with AKAIO. The only shortcoming is that it doesn't have a lot of fancy features.

The SuperCardDSTwo lets you play GBA games on your DSi, but it costs more. So, your pick.

yes but acekard should be able to use moonshell meaning if you have moon shell 2 you get all the r4's nice ability's.

Why do people insist on buying the worst product on the market for about the same price as something really good.

    Brand recognition, also Genericized trademark.
    They're not "R4s", they're flashcarts, just like they're not "Q-tips", they're cotton swabs.

The name R4 is really well known out there.

because the R4 is cheap in price compared to the supercard or ackared.

some people just are not willing to pay much so they go for the crappy cheep stuff.

on the other hand its meant for beginners (even i got one and now i lost it and I'm not getting another bad cheap r4 so I'm getting a ackared)

I owned an original R4 a few years back. It didn't give me any issues then, so I opted to buy an R4i Gold since it could support microSD HC cards and the original only 2GBs.

I've ran a few homebrew apps on it with little difficulty (most were internet-based so I had to fix the WiFi settings via a ROM like Mario Kart DS).

The games though I had some problems in the beginning because after a few soft resets it'd corrupt the data on the card and I'd have to format it again, losing all of my games/saves on it (thankfully they were backed up). After reformatting the card one last time and using an unofficial firmware update from File Trip it got to work, although it took a uneccessary work to do that.

Game-wise it's compatible with a lot of them and if you run into issues there's always a patch out there somewhere. Not all the time though, and to rely on a patch/fix/run around method just shows the unrealiability of the cart itself.

So ehh, I don't recommend it. Sure, you can buy it and get it to work with most ROMs, but be prepared to do a lot of second hand work to get it to work properly. I'm looking into buying a Supercard DSTWO considering its high reviews, so I'd say go for that one if you can spare the cash on it.

Once again, no. ShopTemp is confirmed quality, and when they tell you something's real, it will be. And on the off chance it isn't, they have a great support staff.
