Hardware Dock no longer displays 1080p

My switch dock no longer shows a picture on my TV when in 1080p mode. 720p works perfectly fine. I have tested other docks and ruled out any console problems. Has anyone had this experience and is there a possible fix for it?

Are you saying that it works with other docks but not your own? Have you also tried doing a full shutdown, waiting a few seconds, and reboot it?

The dock does not output 1080p on the TV. I have tried everything including other switches in the dock. It only outputs 720p. My guess is the HDMI port needs to be replaced. I am looking for someone who has had the same issue or knows more about similar broken docks.

Not all games support 1080p in docked mode, it depends on the game.

Have you used ReverseNX to flag your console as handheld previously?

How are you sure it is in 720p mode? Does the TV say that?

Hmm, so everyone else's Switch that you've asked to try also do not display anything at 1080p with your dock? Could be the dock itself, or maybe the cable? What about the TV? I remember having an old plasma TV that used to accept 1080i when I had my Wii U connected to it, but after some years, it crapped out on that setting, and I had to restrict myself to 480p (no 1080p support).

I'd probably assume some contact issue with the USB-C connector or the HDMI port on the dock. You could try some drops of alcohol (>= 70%) or contact cleaner on both of them and then some good plug-unplug action in order to move any eventual debris out of the way.

If this doesn't work you could try going at it with yet again some alcohol or contact cleaner and a toothbrush.

Having failed of all the above you might want to try to teardown the dock and look for oxidation or corrosion on the board / plugs / ribbon cables.

Worst case scenario you have a dead component and you would need board level repair, but I doubt it.

There are only 2 things that could cause not to output 1080p

1. The HDMI Cable might be Broken and need to be replaced (try a new hight Quality HDMI Cable)
2. AV Chip inside your Switch is Broken.

The USB Port is NOT the issue because you said your Switch outputs 480p/720p in docked mode.

Are you using a Samsung TV? I have seen multiple people using a Samsung TV having issues with 1080p, but setting it to 720p resolves the HDMI flicker (or straight up zero picture). The solutions that I have heard for the HDMI flicker are as follows:

1. Set the TV Resolution to 720p - This is, in my opinion, a stupid solution as you're further limiting an already limited console.
2. Change the RGB Range from Auto/Full to Limited - It could be that your TV/monitor doesn't support the full color gamut.
   
3. Replace the dock with a verified non-Nintendo branded dock ("verified" means a brand that is confirmed not to brick your Switch) - some TVs, Samsung TVs in particular, have issues with the way the Nintendo-branded dock works.

I just bought a new switch and the HDMI either cuts out entirely, or it flickers. This only occurs when the TV Resolution is set to 1080p. Setting the RGB Range to Limited did not resolve the issue. I am using a Samsung TV, and I'm going to test the new dock idea myself within the next few weeks. I have had to set my TV Resolution to 720p for now, and this irritates me greatly.

The OP has stated that the Switch drives 1080p on other docks, so we can safely discount USB Type-C on the Switch side, TEGRA outputs and the P13USB chip.

Focusing on the dock only (you have confirmed the cable is known good). Let's assume same TV worked with other docks.

Only running at 720p and below suggests a bandwidth issue - so losses on the lines, or actual lost display lanes.

For losses on the lines, I'd focus on the USB Type-C connector and HDMI connector on the dock for dirt/damage.

For actual lost lanes, you could have a damaged pin on the dock's USB Type-C or a problem with the DP>HDMI convertor in the dock, or a problem with the HDMI connector suffering a damaged pin.

You can pick up second hand docks for £20, so you may want to cut your losses and shell out for a replacement.
