Gaming Do you safely remove?

This applies to anything: usb, memory sticks, cellphones, mp3s, etc.

i used to just yank them damn thing out, but after a mp3 player corrupting on me, i've become very paranoid, and i always safely remove now.

I always used to just pull it out, but now windows yells at me that it needs to check my memory stick for errors everytime i plug it it. when i let it check for errors, it just says that it is in use and tells me to sceduel a disk check, but i cant be bothered to do that.... i safetly remove now.

When I'm using OSX, I'm safe removing every time now, because the "not properly ejected"-prompt is disturbing and deletion of all your data on a 8GB jumpdrive =! funny

On Windows XP or Vista I don't care for safe removing.

Just change its option to 'Optimize for quick removal' and you can just take it out whenever.
If you have the standard option on which is 'Optimize for performance' where it's required to do 'Safely remove hardware'
before taking it out. Then I can confirm that your usb , memory etc will break eventually if you don't do 'safely remove hardware' first.

I corrupted a lot of USB sticks and SD cards in the past, so now I always safely remove (Windows and Linux).

Erm, i usually safely remove, but the one time that i really don't care is when i'm trying to get something working on the Wii through SD. I have a card reader plugged in, and at that point, i put the sd in, move shit around, yank and toss into the Wii. Its saves time. If i safely remove it, i'd have to unplug/replug the USB connection EVERY time, and it gets irritating. Other than that, whether at home on PC or at work on my Mac, i always safe remove the sticks.

For me it depends. Usually(Not always the case) if it is not reading or writing pulling it out is fine.


Either way I do not care, I usually have everything backed up prior.

Yes. I always safely remove. Every time. I did a little test about 2 years back. I took 2 USB Flash drives and 2 SD cards. About 60% of the time the USB Flash drives corrupted on a straight pull out. About 75% of the time the SD cards would corrupt on straight pull out. So I always safe remove now. This was done on an older PC so dont know if I would get the same results now.

only if im using a mac, cause mac is dumb, and like doesnt finalize your transfers or something unless you do. i have only ever had probs with not safely removing things on a mac.

"Optimize for quick removal" is the default on flash drives and SD cards, cellphones and cameras too.
It's just external HDDs that have "optimize for performance" set (which also causes the problem i mentioned above, that they're always in use.)
