There is no such thing as an open sandwich. Let me explain.

Open-faced sandwiches are not sandwiches, because they fail to sandwich anything. For the same reason, wraps, burritos, and the like are not sandwiches. Sandwiching fillings between two things is different from wrapping them inside one.

Let's just look at the definition of the word sandwich. Now number 1 is important because it clearly says to be a sandwich you need 2 slices of bread :)

I like my sandwich two-faced.
A slice of bread between two layers of sandwich filling.

A true sandwich requires a top slice of bread for reasons of structural integrity. You have to have a decent grip on the sandwich, and not have ingredients roll or slide off all over the place.
Some people use large slices of cheese in place of the top slice but that is cheating, and also limits your cheese positioning options.

This is why I hate tomato and lettuce in my sandwich. The water from the mato makes every slippy. The lettuce doesn’t help. It’s like a plastic sheet. Now you have a slipNslide
