Like I move in with a young family in a non-English speaking country, teach their children English for an hour a day and they give me a free room to stay in. Is this a realistic idea or is my head in the clouds?

What you're asking for is basically a live in private tutor. You will have to check with the immigration rule of the country you will be staying if there's an option for you.. I've never came across anyone that did this before and it won't be just an hour a day either.

Although, if you're really interesting in TESL, then there are multiple agencies that you can look up for details. I did that in Japan for a year then Thailand, back in 2005-07. The agency will find a workplace for you as well as an (affordable) accommodation. Back then you only need a BA (from an English speaking University) to be able able to apply. Not sure what's the requirements are these days.

Some countries are very hospitable to people helping the family and can be very accommodating. Especially if you help out around the house to help ease the burden of hosting an extra person.

Wouldn't you expect positions like that to be very highly in demand if they existed?

You'd probably have to be very well-connected to get a position like that. And without connections, you'd probably be expected to work a whole lot more than an hour a day and in rather crummy accommodations and in uncomfortable parts of the country, at best.
