As many regular visitors of the site know we are forever waging a war against spam bots here. We are generally quick to exterminate them and their threads thanks to quick reporting by our members and vigilance by the moderating team and I would like to thank everyone who takes the time to bring spambots to our attention.

However tonight something happened that genuinely made me both angry and disappointed at the same time and also made me question the common sense of some of our most prolific and well known members.

A porn spambot made a thread on the forum with graphic images and links in its opening post. People proceeded to post in this thread not once or twice, but nine times.

So this thread was bumped to the top of the latest discussion tab and given more views nine times with idiotic posts ranging from the usual "reported" to people just thinking they are funny.

Let me make it clear:

DO NOT BUMP OBVIOUS SPAM UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, ESPECIALLY IF IT IS PORNOGRAPHIC!

Just report it!

I am going to take a few hours out to calm down before I take any action if any on the people who bumped that last thread, my immediate reaction being to suspend you all for your stupidity.

Bots will never sleep, they can't be reasoned with or bargained with and they absolutely will not stop until your are spammed.

They'll be back!

The funny thing is that I feel like I haven't seen them for a few months. I thought that the staff implemented something effective to counter them but I guess I was around when mods were awake and stealthy.

I believe that bots are programmed at specific time and they check if staffs are online or not, so if no staffs are online for more than 15 minutes and they go spam until one staff returns.

Yeah, I've noticed an uptick recently. I never know if I'm spamming the Report posts, when I report multiple spam posts from a single spammer, but I report the spam poster anyway with a "Spam" note in the Report to make sure mods are aware of each individual spam.

I believe that reporting the users is sufficient. Other than that, that's how I do it + I hide their content with the Ignore option so that I know which ones I've already reported. Once in a while, I clear my list of ignored users which is pretty much spammers only. No one else made me mad (yet?).

It would be way worse if they weren't inplace. If 88 can get caught, it must be pretty darn effective. But people download all kind of junk and become spambots, so its a cat and mouse game.

I do think forum should hire new moderators who are night owl or sleep during day, so they can annihilate the spammers quickly.

or make all online status invisible for all moderators/admins, so spammers wouldn't know whoever is online or not.

My hours are stupidly sporadic, I would happily volunteer

Please do not reply on obvious spam. You can't do more than click on report and wait for the mods to remove spam.

Or go for the old fashioned flogging. Every spam bot gets hit with a paddle each time they mention telephone services.
