Sorry for derailing your thread @Cammygirl192 Anyways continuing on. The scary part is how you die and what happens after even though we the living never know. It could be a out of body / mind experience like heaven or hell or it could just be nothing.

I don't believe in an afterlife. I believe that when we die we're just gone. That doesn't scare me at all.

I like to believe in the after life because the fact that I could go from living life to pitch blackness without even knowing there is blackness and with that there might be a after life calms me down.

Reposting here, since you created the thread while I was typing this up

I don't want to get off on too much of a tangent here, but as sex and death are two of the main driving forces in society I think they're inexorably linked.
You're right. People are forgotten in time. That's why we have to make our mark on the world. We have to build things, or create things, that will live on when we're gone. And more than our marks on the world, we also have to make our marks on people. They are the ones who will carry our memory as far as they can. They are the ones who will be most influenced by who we were, and live differently because of how we affected them.
For instance, I'm not the same man I would have been had I never known Densetsu. I'm a better man because of his influence. And I hope that people will say the same for me when I'm gone.

    Under your fucking chair.
I have the feeling we would still live on in some way, but "live" isn't the word. But I can't say, no one can.
And whether it is or not, I don't see it as scary, I didn't do anything wrong to feel that way.

Maybe it depends on how you see life. To me, life is just constant input. Relentless, unavoidable input. I hope when I die I just get some bloody peace and quiet.

If you don't get peace and quiet now, I really don't think you'll get it after death.

I won't have any awareness of that though. On account of being, you know, dead.

I have a lot that I'd like to say in both of these threads, but *chuckle* life is going to get in the way for a while.
Time for me to head to work. I look forward to reading through these threads when I return.

You wont then but you do when your alive which is why it's scary. At least for me just the thought of being forgotten by your wife / husband / kids is terrifying and you won't even have a brain to remember them.

Just cause of the fact that nothing works the way we want it to. No one can say what happens in death for certain, but we can somewhat say every 99% of dying men die with reluctance.
Since no one can really say, I bring in my own view about how we don't get what we actually desire; for example, wars can go on for years, they can drive you nuts and make you "disturbed", the war can end, and you may say you've found peace, but is that really so? A little trigger and your disturbance is back.

What drives you to say that you won't have any awareness? Life isn't as certain as one may think.

I have feeling that we will be reborn into another person after death. We will never have any remembrances of our past lives and we'll just live our next lives normally.

I don't place huge emphasis on a personal legacy, but I hope that I will be remembered for some positive things when I'm gone. My special needs apps have helped a lot of people, and I'm planning to write a couple of books on autism. I'm also tentatively planning a science fiction novel.

But again, since I won't be conscious of it, I don't care.

Well, I believe things work how they work whether we want it to or not. I don't think things turn out the opposite of how we want them to even if it feels that way. I think this is more about whether you are an optimist or a pessimist and how this shapes your perception of what has happened to you.

I have yet to be presented with any convincing evidence to the contrary.

Don't quote on parts, I typed most of it so I could explain myself better. And so that's not what I meant.
When I said it does not work according to what we want, I meant just what you said, we have no control over outcomes/life.
And just because you don't have evidence to go against what you think, you think firmly it is right? Why? Then how did you get the idea in the first place? That had evidence I presume?

I have evidence which supports physical reality. I have none which supports any other kind of reality. So I base my prediction on the evidence I have available, which is that we have a physical existence.

Basing it on physical existence is stupid, because we will cease to physically exist.
