Hacking Direct title update safe?

I'm on 9.5 Emunand and today I noticed that Xenoblade Chronicles 3d has an update .. it seems that we now have 2 options to update: through eshop and directly. I know you need to be on 9.6 to access the eshop but is it safe to try to download the update directly or will it try to update my emunand to 9.6?

No. Do not update if a rom asks you to. Install the update from a cia instead
