I've used many drives since I've modded many many wii's and I've had the best luck with drives that are usb2.0 Seagate and WD. However some that are 3.0 backward compatible seem to have started to work better.

IMHO keep your receipt and if the drive doesn't work return it and get another one. Just tell them it doesn't work with your device but it's not faulty or that u just didn't like it. The reason shouldn't matter as long as u have the receipt you should get what U want. When u find one that works let us know what it was.

Thanks I'll see if I can find a Seagate one, but I hope other users share what worked for them as well just in case, I really think there should be a list for hard drives that work for DM and if they go to sleep mode or not, the compatibility here is much worse than the SD!

As for keeping the receipt and returning it, I don't think that'll work, I tried that before and they refused to return it once it was open, I don't think any mall here accepts returning hard drives after being unpacked, but I can try again!

REALLY?!! They won't accept it? I've dealt with CompUSA, Office Depot, HHGreg & Radio Shack, they've accepted my returns. Hope it all goes well for ya and if you have to be a dick man do it, tell em' I want to speak with your regional f'kin manager if I have to lol, but really they shouldn't be giving you a hard time  , if you're unsatisfied with their product the customer is always right and they should abide by that. Again hope your next DM HDD venture fairs well.

I'm using two Seagate Free Agent Go (250 and 320), and they both have the same problem: Providing different PID/VID randomly, one of them not being compatible with DM.

So I don't know if it's related to the Firmware version of the device.
Maybe newer drives are better, mine are ~4-5 years old, with the Sleep time disabled using the provided software.

Maybe I'm better off ordering a hard drive then, one that is known to work with DM and not go to sleep mode, I really hope Crediar (or anyone else) would fix the sleep mode issue with DM then I can just buy whichever hard drive I want!

Yea mine are about 2 years old and they work well, I got fairly lucky I guess, I still think your beat bet is to buy from somewhere you can return the merchandise easily.

Thank you for the advice, I'll try to get a Seagate HDD where I can return it if I could, I'm not in a hurry so I shall look for the best deal I can find, I was lucky with the SD though, the minute I bought a 32GB SanDisk SD back when DML was using Nintendo's code the new one came out and it had the SD compatibility issues, my old 8GB Sony SD which I was using before wasn't compatible but I upgraded to SanDisk at the time anyway, I guess I was lucky there like you with the HDD!

I have a 320GB Seagate Free Agent (not 'Go') I believe it is the previous series to the 'Go' series. Same ss Cyan, problem with detection from DIOS MIOS, prolly work 80%+ of the time, has always worked for Wii games and it is able to turn off sleep mode easily.

I'd take that over working every time but going to sleep mode actually, it's a pain to have to install DML and copy the game to the SD every time I wanna play games like Resident Evil where it has no music most of the time or games like Crazy Taxi and Super Monkey Ball with audio stream, it's as if I'm back to using DML again!

wasnt the hdd sleep thing already solved? i mean i had that problem a long time ago and one of the updates fixed it.

the problem was fixed on SOME drives. Others still go to sleep,
...possibly because it just keeps requesting the same information repeatedly to keep them from sleeping and some drives might just remember what information it's requesting in cache.to be able to keep responding and still put the drive to sleep.

The sleep thing was something I heard about years ago with the USB loaders originally. So I took an internal HDD and put it in an external USB case. Never ever had a single problem that way (and I have 4 other friends whose Wiis I modded with the same type of set up). That should work~

Just now noticed that DM has been updated to 2.3... anyone have any compatibility updates to note compared to 2.2?

Is it a simple update or did a lot change drastically in this edition? Anything I should keep an eye out for?

I don't know how to do that, I buy normal external hard drives off the mall, the simple ones, I'm no expert in hardware stuff!

It's incredibly simple. 1. buy an internal HDD or re-use an old one you already have 2. buy a internal-to-external case (make sure to buy the right interface - like if your HDD is IDE or SATA) 3. put the HDD into the case, some don't even have screws, just pop-tabs - 4. lastly, connect it to you Wii.
If you can put a video card into a PC or anything remotely that easy, you can do this. :)
