with an N64 controller. I can't stand it. But when i tried with a wii u gamepad, no its actually a pretty good game. But what is up with the framerate? It runs at full speed but come on.

First time playing? Was my favorite game in 1998 so I could be bias. I even played thru the DS version, which is way worse lol. I didn't notice any issues with the controller back then, but haven't used a real N64 pad in a very long time. For the framerate, full speed for a late 90s game is 30 fps.

24FPS in europe, it's what used to be the framerate of most TV's so the game actual looked and felt better. it was as much as possible a synced system. it was when the screaals got bigger and the tech behind it changed there came increase of FPS

Mario kart had better multiplayer, except for icicle pyramid
Eh I disagree Diddy Kong Racing was better because it had a single player story on the island and collecting balloons plus multi player worlds above Mario kart 64 plus the different varieties of vehicles was awesome just better to me

I hate the N64 and pretty much every game on it. I actually thought this was one of the better ones, strangely enough. I still didn't play it all that much at the end of the day. Sega Saturn for the win.

Yep, that's why I said better multiplayer, not single player ;)

I generally view Mario Kart as a weak example of fun kart games (there are simulation gokart racers), and back on the PS1/N64 then most things that tried their hand did better (Diddy Kong, Crash, Lego, Digimon...). In the years since though... I think people holding Mario Kart up as a gold standard to be copied rather than operating under the "fun kart racer, how do we do it" mindset has caused some utter drivel and general stagnation of the gameplay style.

Mario 64 battle mode is something special and Diddy Kong struggles there. Multiplayer race wise though... no contest and Diddy Kong for me. The weakest part of Diddy Kong is the hub world stuff, though I would hardly hold Mario Kart 64 or most of the subsequent efforts as paragons of UI design (where is my selection of tracks tournament, custom lap counts, custom AI, custom pickups, modifiers... I mean they had it in contemporary to all this smash brothers).
