Devolution is a gamecube game loader that runs in Wii mode.
CFG probably has that option because there is another loader that can run GameCube games, but in GC mode, called DiosMios.

Edit: if you go back to the first page..you can actually read more about what Devolution is and does..

So just now i can only think i can turn the wii off using remotes. That untill i can use classic controller pro in GC games.

You still can't turn off with Wiimotes. That will probably come at the same time as the classic controller. For now you can enjoy playing phantasy star games online and actually having music in games that use audio streaming. It also loads a lot faster than DM(L)

Don't forget that Devolution has around 50% better frame-rate performance as well, which is great for games that had very noticeable slowdown like Midway Arcade Treasures 3.

Also take note that the first post is outdated. In particular, F-Zero GX worlks fine.

The other this is that Devolution is considerably simpler to set up than DIOS MIOS is, and doesn't require installing any of the custom system hacks that DIOS MIOS requires. (I personally can't get DM/L to work for the life of me, but Devolution "just worked")

Wow, the world changed since i was a kid.

You used to have one console or PC which you could play a game on, and it was very special if a game came out on different platforms.
Now people are demanding that the game they have bought can be played on multiple platforms for the same price, and they also own different consoles too (although why this is escapes me completely).

Don't forget people, it still takes time and sometimes much effort for a game to be ported to other platforms.
So i don't think this would happen very soon, also due to the fact every console has a unique feature.

Times change. When I was a kid, ther were no cellphones, now people demand internet (which didnt exist back then either) on their phones and the ability to watch movies in HD (HD didnt exist either, we had VHS) and thats fine. So why shouldnt videogames change? Why should we accept to be screwed over by videogames again and again when we have other companies that offer other services try to cater to us?

It is a good thing we can demand and HD virtual console. Take Resident Evil 4. First, you got the GameCube game. Then, if you wanted the new features, you HAD to buy the PS2 version. If you wanted the update with slightly improved graphics and better cntrols, you HAD to buy the Wii Version. And if you wanted HD; you HAD to buy the PS3/360 version. So you payed for the same game 4 times.
Is it REALLY too much to ask that companies accept that we DONT buy the same game multiple times? How hard can it be to have a gamer account that registers your games and if there is an update available, you get it for free OR AT LEAST PAY LESS if you already own the game.

Think of it: You own Megaman 3 for Wii Virtual console. Now, the game gets released on 3DS. So you need to buy it again. But if you had it connected, you could re-download it for free because you already paid for it on Wii. You should also be able to have it on you WiiU, not in the dreaded Wii mode though, but on your WiiU mode. Why? Because you PAID FOR THE GAME. It works with movies. I bought a blu ray and canw atch that on my TV. Nowadays, most blurays come with digital copy and dvd, so that i can put the dvd into a portable dvd player, give it to my mom or watch it at a friends house who does not have a bluray player. Also, I ahve a digital copy that I can put on my tablet or phone. And this is a good thing.

Game companies screw us over big time. They demand us to pay up to 70 bucks for a game (and that is moderate, compared to Australia) for whichw e basically are BETA TESTERS because modern games ship not when they are done, but when most profit can be made. So you have to live with a buggy piece of software which will, IF YOU ARE LUCKY AND THE GAME SOLD, be patched later. Or maybe never. But you paid 70 bucks. Then you get DLC and whatnot that was already on the disc, already in the game and the developers just chose to lock that portion of the game so you have to pay more. And then six months later, there is the game of the year edition for another 60 bucks that has all the patches and DLC on the disc, but features a new EXCLUSIVE MISSION so that you have AGAIN pay full price.

How can you NOT feel screwed over?

So please excuse me when I demand Nintendo relases their N64 and GC games in Widescreen HD if possible (which it is most of the time) because If I have to pay for the Wind Waker again, I would at least prefer to get an experience I don't get on my cube. Or else, i will just hook up my cube or in that case, Devolution, which allows me to play the game I ALREADY PAID FOR in widescreen.

Final point: If game publishers want less of a used games market, perhaps they should focus on releasing complete games to a reasonable price instead of incomplete buggy beta versions for 70 bucks. And if Nintendo seriously wants me to buy a WiiU, they should provide features I am actually interested in. The gamepad is nice. But GameCube WideScreen HD releases would be an added bonus and a definitive system seller in the case of Mario Sunshine and Wind Waker. Just sayan.

Still EzekielRage, i failed to see why you need the same game for your X systems.
That was more or less my point to begin with, does everyone own multiple systems these days?
I sure don't because i don't have the money.

I can agree on one thing, i don't like to pay more then once for a game because of the high prices, but, the way it is now it does not seem very likely to me that that is going to happen because the architecture of the hardware is still very different for each system, just ask the guys that develop RetroArch, developers therefore need time etc. to port stuff, i think they want to be payed for that as well.
Minus one exception, retrogames, it should be not that hard to agree on a new pay system for that.

My opinion is: prices for games overall is to high, lets do something about that, then paying a few bucks extra for a port is not that bad anymore...

Personally I think you're looking at it wrong. At least for me, it's precisely the fact that I want to have my games on one system, not spread across 3 or 4. The idea of having all your games available regardless of system would just be a nice side-effect of an internet-based system.

the architecture of the hardware is still very different for each system, just ask the guys that develop RetroArch, developers therefore need time etc. to port stuff, i think they want to be payed for that as well.
Uhh...emulation doesn't work that way; all you need is to get the emulator to run. So for example, if you put work into getting bsnes to work and have the CPU to run it at full speed, you automatically are able to emulate anything on the SNES perfectly.

Typically development of the emulation core and the emulator itself are two different things that are independent of each other - hence the existence of RetroArch, which take advantage of this very aspect to make porting quicker and more beneficial.

I know it's not Nintendo, but Sony is actually doing something about this (kinda). Everytime I buy a new game from PSN and if there is a PS Vita port available, I get it for free which is like getting a free game. Even the older games I bought years ago are giving me freebie ports to Vita.
I'm hoping that with Sony doing this maybe the big N and others will follow, but I'm not holding my breath.

Excuse me for asking it after ~100 pages, but why should i use Devolution? What does it do? Is some sort of GC iso loader? Why does CFG has a "force Devolution" option?
Hope i enjoy using it.

Its pretty much a Wrapper for running Gamecube games in Wii Mode vs Gamecube mode.
this is useful as Gamecube games may eventually be able to be played with a WiiMote+Classic Controller or use the WiFi/USB Network adapter as a Gamecube BBA.
its also useful as its probably going to be the only way to play Gamecube games on the Wii U [short of Nintendo making them into VC titles for Wii U] via running them via WiiMode.

You don't need a special sony dvd player to play sony dvd's. For a while you needed certain hardware to play iTunes MP3's, and there was a huge wave of public opinion that got that all changed. Every VHS tape worked in every VHS player.

So why, now, when we are technically able, can I not play my old video games on my new console? So that the company can sell me back a new version specifically for that console? Not good enough. Demand more as a consumer, and you'll get it.

A question for devolution and USBL GX users:
I would like to use devolution for my Hitman 2 and Die Hard Vendetta games seing that they have more steady framerate than when played via DM.

Problem is, that via USB loader GX i can't play them with devo, only with DM.
I would like to ask is there an updated loader.bin for devolution via GX? I updated boot.dol to r160 for devo and when started via Devo booter in HBC my games verify and play fine.

However, when the same games are launched via GX the games work like they did in the original devo revision i had (Hitman stutters and DH black screens). Again, i updated the boot.dol for devo in the path that GX sees and i also updated the GX boot.dol to r1205 (last stable vesrion iirc). Still the same issue. So, is there an updated loader.bin file for devo in GX?

yes, you need to update your "loader.bin" file.
Go to the first post of this topic, and download the "devo src".
In the zip, you will find the loader.bin file. (current version is r169, do not look at the version mentioned in the forum)

Put that file in the folder that USBLoaderGX is expecting (you can choose/change it in the GX settings > user paths > Devo loader)
By default, it's using the loader.bin located in /apps/gc_devo/loader.bin
You can change the path to "SD :/wiiflow/" that way it will work with both Wiiflow and GX ;)

You can see the installed version of devolution by going into the Settings > Credit.
You can have multiple version of devolution for testing purpose (keep one in different folders, and point the folder you want).

As easy as be so arrogant as you in posting it.
First post was not near so clariifying as Etheboss was, not for someone who never read from Devolution.

Thank you, Etheboss.

Thank you, tueidj. I returned my friend's Baten Kaitos soon after i riped the iso with superdump and i didn't knew i needed the disc also. But i used my own paper mario for testing, it works, but give a "memory card corrupted" with my 1019 blocks one. Retail disc works fine, i have a save at the end for this game. Superdump rips for a G8ME01_0.BIN, i rename it as game.iso and it works.

So who all has a Wii-u? Anyone got HBC on Wii-u? I think a native Wii-u hack w/ Devo would be great, gamepad and Wii-u sounds amazing... Wonder what will be said at the conference this past weekend??

So, can i play gamecube games with a usb keyboard? And by that I mean using the arrows to control the caracther, jump with space, and so on... 'cause I still have my copy of Mario Sunshine, but not my GC... and controllers here where I live are very hard to come by... Umm... anyway I guess I wont be able to run Devolution, since it needs GC controller in order to start up... right?

If the game let you control Mario with the keyboard when playing on a real GameCube console, then you can do the same with Devolution.
The keyboard support in Devolution only add keyboard support for games which require keyboards (like Phantasy Star Online). That's all.

It doesn't convert a controller into another one.
If the game supported the keyboard, it will support it the same way.

That is not correct. A while back tueidj added USB keyboard and mouse support for all games, although the control mapping is hard coded for killer7. But he said it should work in all games: http://gbatemp.net/threads/devolution-public-release.330554/page-83#post-4419889
