I "HAD" my Wii chipped to be able to play titles from other countries, it isn't just for backups for all people... Now for the funny part, I have however run backups (by mainly online games now) as my kids scratch everything to all hell (they range from 16 years to 6 months in age) its bad enough to see what gets flushed down the toilet, yes even a gamecube disc one time although it was a bad one s I didn't mind and found it funny, but that's not scratching the surface!! My discs however get scratched to all sin if they are uncovered by those little demons.
Ok, so I am ranting - yes, I'm peeved as I heard some people arguing today at the bookstore (aren't these suppose to be quite? both were major geeks I may add and probably could never hold their own against anyone except themselves) but arguing about backups and emulators and one guy was saying how emulators are piracy ( I interrupted and said "Yes what better way to pirate than to COPY the machine, hell why bother copying the game when you can copy the whole damn thing!") One guy didn't think that was funny, the other laughed but he went on to say how copying media is wrong and pretty much had the mentality of the whole Hollywood vs VHS and/or Music Industry trying to ban cassettes as they would kill the industry type --- urrghhhh . I just didn't know where that was all headed, so I headed on to get some coffee before I ended up even more frustrated.. It got me thinking of talks I had with some of my friends - A few of you guys know me here and my involvement with music and a couple of you know how I have very close childhood friends in a band that has been very successful all over the world. I see most of their opinion on the subject (but I am not here to speak for them) pertaining to music and I'm just glad to see that success doesn't always change "opinions". They made good money on their first few albums and yes I am sure they would be happy if they continued making money on the old but they don't let the old albums change the creation of the new and enjoy when people cover their old (Music MOD!)
I look at this with my music and media - The one thing I get tired of hearing from people though is that "backups" are BAD or EVIL, if that is the case, anything converted to one format or another is going to earn many of us some time in the burning.... I think hell needs us though as the world isn't full of bad enough people to fill all those spots down there! More digital police, please... Oh wait, you mean you don't actually have to "try out", go to boot camp or even have some gonads to be a geek police? I'm in.... Ohh wait, what if I've already done some of the "other?" but ok sorry,l will leave that to the proper authority as it isn't my job to police the world as in my opinion ,we already have enough of it..
Moving on, its time to geek out, going to go play some Redneck rampage then maybe some old Duke Nukem (some of my favorites..) and hope someone doesn't get mad at me b/c I actually backed them up to my drive and maybe loaded a cheat or two, God forbid manipulate the PC so it will run in/on a different environment (the industry sad that was bad also at one point.) oh and that emulation will be the root of even more evil (many companies are putting patents on emulation now regardless.) because we all know all the hurt that will happen to these corporations (that have been bought/sold out time and time again) if we "emulate" or play a 10+ year old game in this modern age. Hell the people profiting now aren't even the creators/developers as much of it was sold a long time ago on all these oldies.
Last but not least (after my rant that I am telling YOU sorry if I made you mad and YOU who thinks they are sneaky and invading some of our privacy (logged and released soon enough.) but you - Yes the person who actually read through this junk?!? Thanks for reading this far and hearing me out. I am really happy "emulators" like Devolution exist, they bring a lot of joy back to people like me for a system that I feel never got enough credit. I also feel if we continue supporting these "police" or trying our-self to be "police" when we are not, we are headed to a bad path. In my opinion, lets not make the internet a neighborhood watch - stay mature, keep it fun and keep it real so all these policies won't end up turning to reality for all of us and one day we even lose the rights to EMULATE.. (Lets start a Devolution!) hehehheh
TVO
BTW : I was serious about the game - Duke Nukem for starts, Redneck Rampage or Myth to end (yeah you guys probably thought Postal) time to play...
