Launching today is Soulstice, a dark fantasy action game from developer Reply Game Studios. A brand-new trailer accompanied its release:

The fantasy-inspired world of Soulstice will transport players to places filled with danger and beauty. As sisters Briar and Lute race toward a Tear in the sky that has formed high atop the city of Ilden, increasingly horrific beings known as the Spawn of Chaos continue to pour into their world from the other side of the Veil. Only a Chimera, a powerful living weapon born from the union of two souls, can oppose these vile and ravenous beings.

Soulstice is available now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Be sure to keep an eye out for our full review!

Hopefully the game ends up being better than the demo. I played the demo recently and it has potential and heart, but there are a lot of issues with feedback, readability, and communication of mechanics: Even as an character action and souls veteran, I felt like I was just sort of bumbling my way through without really understanding why I was winning or losing.

The death of the mid budget game (popular during the PS2, very limited on the 360, was dead by the PS4) has been almost up there with the death of local co-op. This has the hallmarks of such thing -- it might cost you in game length and graphics (animations there had the air of the pre mocap for everything times) but you do often get a focused art style, possibly some decent mechanics (not always but when it is good it is good, hopefully the comment above about the demo don't carry through or it is one of those things that clicks after a sensible amount of hours) and something more novel than bland pap that has to appeal to millions and millions lest it be declared a failure.

I feel like that sort of middle shelf game started to really come back mid-to-late 8th generation but I agree: That kind of thing really did disappear for a while, and now it's starting to make a return.
