There is nothing to let you know you are in Gateway mode. You are in Gateway mode from the time you run the profile exploit, until you power cycle the console.

I was just thinking, and came up with something. Can't I check if I'm in Gateway mode simply by inserting the red card?
I assume that it will say "No card inserted" if I'm in non-Gateway mode, and it will show whatever ROM is on the card in Gateway mode, right?
Am I right in assuming this?

Yes that's right..There will be no icon if you are not in Gatway mode but if there is a icon you are in Gateway mode.

Yes.

If you use DS mode, then you have to reinstall the exploit.
