Shuhei Yoshida, the President of Sony Worldwide Studios has crushed the hopes of the PS3 ever getting cross-game voice chat. Stating that it will never happen due to the console's RAM being almost entirely consumed by the System's software.

"Once a game gets RAM we never give it back, it’s not possible to retrofit something like that after the fact… The game has to use its own memory to do [in-game voice chat]. There’s always voice chat in the game. But it’s a part of a game feature. It’s not a part of an OS feature. That’s the reason in terms of the ability to have voice chat across different games.”

Whilst the PS3 may not be getting cross-game voice chat. The PlayStation Vita on the other hand will feature it as it carries 512MB of RAM, double of what the PlayStation 3 has.[/p]

Just to clarify, that statement applies to system RAM. The PS3 can only use 256MB of it's 512MB total for system ram (which is where cross game chat would reside). The Vita is free to use the full 512MBs of it's RAM for system which explains why X-game chat is feasible on that system.

Some time ago, when I had many gamer friends on my xbox friend list, I used to make a party with them, even if they were playing something else.

Chatting in the x360 is more like skype than chatting in TF2/Halo/CoD. It's about making contact with distant people/friends, it's not about setting a strategy or flashing your rank/stats in the current game.
Sure, in-game chatting with strangers, with opponents or random teams is ok, but chatting with friends is much more cooler than that.

They could simply lower the bitrate of the voice or some tech crap like that, should loose on the quality but will hardly consume any RAM at all, still they don't bother in doing so .

Although cross-game chat is important, i still think they are overlooking many other problems with the PS3, particularly the XMB itself.

What!?
But voice chat doesnt take up that much...
Why don't they just make the OS a bit more RAM efficient and make the quality of voice chat lower.
I really want to be able to talk while playing a non-online game.
Other then having to use a computer or some crap like that...

Ok, here's the deal Nintendo.
I don't care if you don't have In-Game chat with strangers, IF you let us have party chats.
Hm i wonder if they'll ever get this message
