I don't get why they can't do it, the RAM space allocated to the os is full?
Probably.
I guess the RAM allocated for the XMB overlay is not enough, since if they allocated more RAM for cross chat, older games that need to use the RAM will not work any more or you cannot use cross chat in them games, which defeats the purpose of cross gaming chat.
Correct me if I'm wrong

is the memory on-board, soldered on, or non-replaceable some other way?

cause if it is replaceable/upgrade-able, Sony can offer a service that allows people to have chat, but only if the system detects the increased memory

people can void their warranty by doing it manually for cheap, or sony can think of a way to supply official expensive upgrades.

Why would they go through all of that trouble? This generation is coming to an end. Wouldn't it make more sense to hold that feature back for their next console?

None of my friends who are PS3 owners actually own a headset, so this doesn't affect me at all.

But hell, with 7 cores (Excluding 1 reserve core) and a HDD of at least 20GB, you'd expect the possibility of at least using 1 core and converting some space in the HDD to RAM (If it were possible) for cross-game chat

I'm calling bullshit on this. If the Xbox is easily capable of it, this really shouldn't be too much of an issue.

At this point, it's almost inexcusable to not have this basic feature. Sure, it's cool to know the PSV will have it, but there really is no excuse for the PS3 not to.

But the way that the PS3 works is that, at all times in a game, the OS is overlayed on the game (that's why you can access the home menu without quitting a game). In the 360, the OS isn't active, or at least as active as the XMB, so there probably is more memory that can be devoted to the chat.

Unless of course I'm completely wrong. ;O;

I'm inclined to agree with the bullshit callers. Sony could make the system menu lighter on resources (its not like it needs much to run a simple menu overlay) and free up enough RAM.

I understand they're 2 entirely different systems and Operating System...systems...(?) but if my 360 can do it with its, in comparison to the PS3, limited system requirements I don't see why Sony couldn't have rejigged the XMB much earlier in the game to produce the right memory management scheme. Obviously now its near pointless but I'm sure they were promising this for a LONG time and now they're saying it can't be done. Thanks Sony...
