Tutorial  Updated

Create FBI themes

You might've not known this, but FBI has a theme feature. It loads them from /fbi/theme.

Here's how you can make your own themes:
  • Download the FBI repo from Github. ("Clone or download" -> "Download ZIP")
  • Make a seperate folder for your theme, and put the contents of the "romfs" folder in the ZIP inside the folder you've just created. You can dismiss the rest of the ZIP.
  • Edit the images. Make you you keep them in the PNG format and don't resize them.
  • The text colors are stored in the textcolor.cfg file, they're formatted as hexadecimal ARGB (Alpha, Red, Green, Blue). Alpha "FF" means full opacity, so you would probably want to keep that.
  • Done!
You can zip up your folder to share your theme, and install it by putting the contents in the "/fbi/theme" folder (create it if it doesn't exist), and your theme will be in effect the next time you boot up FBI.

Here's a theme I've done myself:

This is what I have come up with.
Had to use Kitkat to take a screenshot. I don't know of any other way.

I dropped the retro look and got cleaner backgrounds.
Added "windows" for certain things and buttons.
Re-centered the larger button. Feel free to use any of the bars and images in other themes.
Except for the FBI icon image. Kind of want that as my own thing. Thanks.

So I'm working on this theme and I can't get rid of the logo.png. Deleting it load the default and giving it a transparent png shows the transparency like you see it in the file. Should I just make the logo.png the part of the background it is covering? I haven't because that would take forever.

Save colors from transparent pixels set the compression level to 0 also I don't exactly know if transparent icons work or not

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

transparent icons work create a new layer in gimp set it to transparency drag it above the layer that is solid and delete the solid layer

They sure do, Gimp worked. Here is my Final. Recentered and All. I'll be back with a Screenshot for previewing.

here's a theme template
you're welcome @elBenyo
OMFG, You've answered my prayers. I wanted this exact thing to exist but didn't think it did. Now I can make a nice Animal Crossing theme for my girlfriend without the trial and error method I used on my theme.

I made a clean theme preview out of the template and moved the bottom part of the body down a little bit

Yay, we're up to a whopping 5 publicized themes. The gap the 3DS has between screens compensates for that IRL. I just reuploaded it to fix the screen gap looking a little big.

I personally use paint.net. I feel like gimp is more complicated. Lol

With paint.net, use the selector tool then select the whole image go to edit then cut. Save your new invisible image.
