Valve today has announced a new expansion to their immensely popular former Half Life mod, Counterstrike, named Counterstrike: Global Offensive.

The mod will feature new maps, characters, weapons, and updated versions of classic Counterstrike content. It will also feature new gameplay modes, matchmaking support, and leaderboards.

What's more surprising about this announcement is that Global Offensive is also coming to "next gen consoles" as well as the PC and Mac, giving console gamers access to one of the most played PC games of all time, albeit updated.

No date was given for the release of Global Offensive, but Valve did say it will release in "early 2012" and will be playable at PAX Prime and the London Games Festival.[/p]
