Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake announced for PS5, will be timed console exclusive

Sometimes, rumors get it right, as proven by this year's earlier rumor that Aspyr Media was working on a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake. Originally released by BioWare in 2004, KotOR, the remake of the incredibly popular classic title will be released exclusively on PlayStation 5, at least, for a short while. For those worried about a PC port, it'll have a simultaneous release with the PS5 version. Aspyr will be in charge of the ground-up remake, having plenty of prior experience porting games to various platforms over the past 20 years, including having ported the original Knights of the Old Republic to macOS back in the day.

AUSTIN, TexasSept. 9, 2021 — Aspyr, Lucasfilm Games, and Sony Interactive Entertainment (“SIE”) have announced Star Wars™: Knights of the Old Republic™ - Remake, a new remake of the original revered Star Wars™ story and blockbuster role-playing game experienced by millions of fans around the world. In development as a PlayStation®5 (PS5™) console exclusive at launch and for PC, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - Remake is completely rebuilt from the ground up for a new generation of players to experience this legendary tale as never before. The news was revealed today in a teaser trailer during the ‘PlayStation Showcase 2021’ featuring the iconic imagery of Darth Revan and the voice-over talent of Jennifer Hale, who played Bastila Shan in the original game.

“We’ve spent the past several years assembling the very best talent from across the industry to deliver a modern vision of this timeless Star Wars legend,” said Aspyr co-founder Ted Staloch. “As lifelong Star Wars fans with extensive experience working with many of its best games, we have the deepest love and admiration for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and cannot wait to share this amazing remake with the rest of the galaxy.”

Development of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - Remake is led by a newly created team composed of industry veterans at developer and publisher Aspyr, working in close collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. Aspyr and Lucasfilm Games have worked together in recent years to bring multiple classic Star Wars titles to modern platforms, including the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The game will be published on PS5 by SIE, while the PC version of the game will be published by Aspyr.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic stands out among the Legends of Star Wars storytelling, and we’re thrilled to be joining with Aspyr and Sony to remake this Legend for a new generation of players,” said Douglas Reilly, VP, Lucasfilm Games. “Our teams have been working closely and share a deep commitment to honoring what fans love about the original, while bringing new fans on this incredible journey.”

“Nearly 20 years after its debut, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remains one of the most highly requested remakes from the PlayStation community,” said Eric Lempel, SVP, Head of Global Marketing, Sony Interactive Entertainment. “The time is finally right to bring this dream to life for both diehard fans and those who have yet to experience it.”

First released in 2003, the award-winning Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic still stands today as a landmark achievement, frequently ranked among the greatest video games of all time. A pinnacle of Star Wars Legends storytelling, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is set around 4,000 years before the events of the original trilogy, introducing a new cast of heroes and villains in an epic struggle for the fate of the galaxy. The game is beloved by fans and has been praised by critics for its deeply engaging narrative, memorable characters, sense of immersion and discovery, and choice-based gameplay.

Who cares? Also, she said KoToR wasn't her favourite, not that she isn't a fan.

She might actually do a good job for all we know. I've been browsing Twitter and it's really sad that people aren't giving her a chance because she's vocal about social justice or whatever

Besides there isn't (or shouldn't be) much story writing to a literal remake.
From what I've been reading it seems there are two different groups against her. One is the Star Wars fans who are appalled that she said The Last Jedi was objectively the best Star Wars movie. The other are males who don't like her overt feminism.

As for the other point, It doesn't really make much sense to hire a writer like her if they aren't wanting the story to be re-written to some degree. Anyone could've just polished up the original script.

I'm not one of those that are bothered by either of the two things, and in any case the original game isn't going anywhere if someone wants to play that instead.

I don't think it's going to go too well, especially with that history of virtue signalling. Let alone her being married to a game producer at Bioware and later Respawn, one can only guess why someone that hates KOTOR got hired for such special project.

In a best case scenario maybe its just nepotism providing her a job in a position that she does not really do anything on. If is is just a remake, the story does not need to be touched at all. Its the graphics and quality that needs to be worried about, Story should be more or less the same unless they want to add more stuff to fill more gameplay or hell, downloadable content.

That said I do not see this as a best case scenario kind of project, and if we are being honest here I would not put all the blame on her if this does end up being flaming garbage. This is an attempt to revive a classic that people love and will make mega dollars just on the hype alone. Without any of the passion or drive behind the original, all we can hope is they do not modernize it to hell in the way that all modern games have been as of late. That and/or it does not become a half assed remake in the same vein as Warcraft 3 Reforged.

So... what about the remake coming to Switch next month? Is that a different game..?

The one coming next month to the switch is just a port of the original game. But I think there might be a few tweaks made similar to the ports of the Star Wars Jedi outcast/academy games to make obsolete mechanics a little more bearable
