Hardware Controller question

My friend has a PS3 and told me about how she tried all the cords she had that she could use to charge her PS3 controller with, but only the one that came with the controller actually caused the controller to charge.

Why is this? I've been trying to help her understand why this is, but googling this only brings up things like "for some reason, controllers sometimes only charge with the cord they come with" and no explanation as to why.

Well, her controller won't. I'm not sure if it's the Sony cable, since I'm told it's a long cable (and I've heard Sony cables are short), but it's the only one that will charge it.

Well, the cables would connect the controller to her computer for using as a gamepad, just not charge it.

I have the same issue, I was wondering if it was just a 'you need Sony branded cables' issue. We lost our main cable so I've been using some old 3rd party cable that I use to connect my PSP to my PC, but alas the controller doesn't hold a charge

truly odd. For the longest time I had a Dualshock3 purely for use as a gamepad for my computer, and was using the cord that came with my HTC phone to charge it/use. also worked with my nokia cord.

it doesn't charge only on the computer or on the ps3 too?
is it a desktop pc or a notebook?

Basically any USB cable with the right ports should charge a PS3 controller. I've got a few different cables (from about 10 years ago or so to the newest being about 1 month old) and all cables work on the PS3 (around 4/2011 model). Also a charging dock like this http://www.play.com/Games/PlayStation3/4-/10848528/Venom-Pyramid-Dual-Charger/Product.html?searchtype=allproducts&searchsource=0&searchstring=venom+ps3&urlrefer=search works without problems with all cables. Do the others cables work with other devices? It's not really unheard of that the cable becomes severed at one end or the other.
