Ok well i'm new to this forum and the idea of flashcarts. This will probably have been asked before but I haven't found this specific question:

What exactly happens to flashcarts when a 3ds is upgraded? I looked around a bit and keep seeing people saying things like "NEVER UPDATE YOUR 3DS" and "well, I updated, I guess that's $20 down the drain." However, I also found some people saying that flashcarts work as long as you update them before putting them on an updated 3ds.

So if I update my 3ds and then put in a flashcart, will it immediately be destroyed and never be usable again or will it just be unreadable until I update it on a separate device?

The reason I ask is because I already have a 3ds updated to 2.1.0-4U and I'd also like to play SM3DL while I wait for an acekard 2i to arrive; but before I actually order the acekard I want to make sure it'll work. What I want to know is, if i update my 3ds and then get the acekard and update it on a friend's DS, will it work alright?

I know that no update has been released for the acekard yet but just hypothetically. And I know similar things have been asked but I'm just so confused about this...help would be appreciated :(

Updates for the 3DS are often made to stop flash carts from running on that 3DS.
The flash cart is not changed, the 3DS is. The 3DS will no longer boot flash carts that have not been updated to get around that latest block.
Flash carts can be updated, but this update needs to run on the flash cart.

So if you update the 3DS first... then it won't run the flash cart.
But you need to run the flash cart in order to update the flash cart in order to run the flash cart...

You know, like locking yourself outside your car. You need third-party help if you do that.

Anyways, no clue on the 3DS's current bypass status.

An email from the Acekard team told me that they will release a firmware update for the big November system update that will launch later this month (unless it already has? Dunno, haven't kept up.)

Ohh okay that clears it up. I was just afraid seeing as I've never used these before.

Thanks for the replies :)

When you upgrade your 3DS, along with all those updates, there will be an anti-piracy program that will be sent along with the other updates. It's meant to block/brick flashcarts, 3rd party programs and other illegal programs. So whatever happens, DON'T update your 3DS.
