I'm still around, so the guide will be updated for evasi0n. :) I'm not sure about how to go about adding screenshots, though, since GBAtemp's gallery was removed (along with IPB).

Unfortunately, you will lose your jailbreak if you update to 6.1. Any App Store apps and settings that you have should remain intact, but anything from Cydia will be gone. You can always rejailbreak it once evasi0n comes out though. ;)

Yeah, that's what I thought... I guess I can go a few days without a jailbreak. Thanks.

Another question, sorry. I'm trying to update to 6.1, and whenever I try it I get an error message (3194) in iTunes and can't finish updating. I'm assuming it's because of the jailbreak. I was under the impression that I could just go ahead and get the update and that that would remove my jailbreak. What do I need to do to update to 6.1?

I have an iPhone 4, iOS 6.0.1, and a semi-tethered jailbreak with redsn0w.

Error 3194 means iTunes failed to verify with Apple that your restore was okay. This could be for a number of reasons, but for jailbreakers, it's usually because something messed with your hosts file (TinyUmbrella has a tendency to do it). Re-installing iTunes should fix the issue.

Also, any time you update an iDevice and plan on jailbreaking, you should always do a full restore from DFU mode, not an OTA update nor a regular update or recovery through iTunes (though none of them should, theoretically, cause any problems). The reason you want to do this is because if the device is in DFU mode, iTunes will flash over the whole .ipsw image instead of just copying over the relevant parts. It's the difference between painting over old drywall or applying all-new drywall and painting. You'll probably never even notice, but you should really go the extra mile, just to be safe.

Alright then, I'll reinstall iTunes and try updating in DFU mode. Thanks, I appreciate it.

evasi0n has officially released. Alongside the PC application, a .deb will also be released that should untether any currently jailbroken iDevice on iOS 6.0-6.1 without having to restore.

From the readme
DESCRIPTION:

- evasi0n 1.0 is an untethered jailbreak for all iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and iPad mini models running iOS 6.0 through 6.1

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:

- MacOSX 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8
- Windows (XP minimum)
- Linux x86/x86_64 (Kernel >= 2.6.24, libgtk+-2.0 >= 2.24.13)

SUPPORTED FIRMWARES:

- iOS 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, and 6.1

INSTRUCTIONS:

- Backup your device using iTunes (or iCloud) before using evasi0n. If something breaks, you'll always be able to recover your data.
- Those who use backup passwords in iTunes must disable them for now. After doing so, iTunes makes a brand new backup. Please wait for that backup to complete before proceeding! Feel free to re-enable your backup password after jailbreaking.
- Please disable the lock passcode of your iOS device before using evasi0n. It can cause issues.
- Launch evasi0n, plug in your device, and click "Jailbreak". Just sit back and observe its progress. Watch for any steps you may be asked to perform.
- Avoid all iOS and iTunes related tasks until evasi0n is complete. Why not just enjoy a brief break from the computer to stretch your legs?
- If the process gets stuck somewhere, it's safe to restart the program, reboot the device (if necessary by holding down Power and Home until it shuts down), and rerun the process.

For those who have taken the plunge and jailbroke their devices now. How is it? Have you experienced any negative side effects so far? I'm just being a bit cautious about doing this even if I am able to backup my device.

Currently, there is a known bug that causes the stock Weather.app to malfunction. It's being worked on and will be fixed shortly. The kinks are always worked out. Some users are reporting issues with Cydia, but that's not the jailbreak, it's the various Cydia repos being overloaded by the flood of new traffic.

Negative side effects? Cydia is slow (due to server load, but it's still negative), there's another icon cluttering up my screens, and I'm suddenly spoiled for choice on which theme I want to put on (yes, that's negative).

This is after playing around with it for about half an hour after re-jailbreaking my iPad2 and jailbreaking my iPhone5.

The evasi0n 6.x Untether tweak is now available in Cydia in the default Cydia/Telesphoreo repo. If your device is jailbroken tethered on 6.x, installing this tweak will untether you without you having to restore and re-jailbreak.

I added evasi0n (with screenshots) to the guide. It's not a bad idea to hold off on jailbreaking since, as Izen said, Weather doesn't work for most people. (Apparently, some people have it working, but many don't.)

I downloaded remove background in Cydia. Which removes all multitask programs at once but it doesnt seem to work is anyone else having this problem or is there another tool that can do this?

The tweak probably needs to be updated for iOS 6.x; there are quite a number of internal changes, after all.

I updated the guide with links for evasi0n 1.1. It contains the fix for the Weather app crashing, and squashes a few other bugs. If you already jailbroke with evasi0n, you can get the fix in the form of an update in Cydia.

I have an iPhone 4, iOS 6.0.1, and a semi-tethered jailbreak with redsn0w.

I'm still having trouble with this. I have tried numerous things. I have uninstalled iTunes in control panel, then reinstalled it (not sure if that removes all iTunes files now that I think about it?), I have edited my hosts file, and I have gone into redsn0w, put my device in pwned dfu mode, and tried shift+clicking restore in iTunes. The first two things gave me the same error, 3194, but when I did the shift+click restore it gave me error 1601. It said "preparing to restore iPhone," stayed on that for a few minutes, then gave me the error message. I've read that tinyumbrell can also cause some problems, but I've only used it once to see if my phone had the shsh blobs to downgrade to 5.1. I don't know what to try anymore. Anybody have any suggestions? I want to upgrade to 6.1 so I can have the latest firmware and completely remove my old jailbreak, but I'm about to just say fuck it and get the cydia app to convert it to untethered.

the current Remove Background doesn't work on ios 6.1.
try KillBackground. 'works for me.

had the same problem [error 3194] when i tried to update my ipod touch4 and ipad2, from 5.1.1 [untethered jailbreak] straight to 6.1.
i edited my hosts file, in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\
and deleted anything with "gs.apple", saved the file then rebooted the pc. downloaded and manually updated with latest ios ipsw file [shift+restore] in itunes and after several tries, it works.
then jailbreak with evasi0n..
do a backup first and sync, just in case.

You can try restoring to 6.0.1 FIRST then restore again to 6.1. If that doesn't work you can try this as a last resort:
1. Turn your phone off.
2. Plug in the USB end of the cable into the computer ONLY.
3. Make sure iTunes is open.
4. Hold the HOME button AND plug in your devices dock cable.
5. You should in a few seconds see a cable and a iTunes logo on your device.
6. iTunes shoud say it detected a device in recovery mode.
Now restore.
