Izen , I don't have Cydia installed and never had , should I have it jailbreaked in order to update to ios 5 ?
You never mentioned you weren't jailbroken. :/

Let me state this one thing clearly outside of everything else. You cannot restore or update to any iOS version 4.0 or later without access to SHSH blobs specifically for your device. If you do not have them backed up, then you will be forced to update to whatever iOS revision Apple is currently signing.

If you're not jailbroken, then you don't have Cydia, which means your SHSH blobs were not saved for any iOS revision by Cydia's servers. You can only access the SHSH blobs Apple is currently signing (which was 6.0.1 a couple days ago, but only 6.1 now), and you can only restore to that firmware. You're in luck, however, as an untethered jailbreak for 6.1 seems to be right around the corner.

An untethered jb for 6.1 is coming for supported A4/5/6 devices (except Apple TV3). If you're interested do not update OTA. Use iTunes instead.

If you have already done OTA, restore via iTunes.

Just restored my iPhone because I heard the jailbreaking wouldn't function properly when updated over the air.

Quick question though:
When the jailbreak untethered comes can I jailbreak my iPhone 4 without having to restore. I restored it to iOS 6.1 and restored from a backup.

I suppose it's okay since you DID restore with iTunes to 6.1.

But I haven't jb-ed in years. I might not be correct.

You should be all set for the jailbreak (without needing to restore). :) Unfortunately, you will have to wait for more than an hour for its release. :P (Signs point towards this Sunday.)

On a side note, the guide now mentions iOS 6.1 and TinyUmbrella. It also has a small mention of the mysterious, not-yet-released "AppleTV3,2."

Should I buy the iPhone 5 ASAP? Because I am scared that if I buy it in 2 weeks, then Apple will release a patch over the jailbreak. And I am assuming the iPhone 5 if I buy one will be on iOS 6.0.1, and then I will have to update to 6.1 to do the jailbreak, but by that time 6.1.1 may come out and I won't be able to update to 6.1.

The jailbreak will probably be backwards-compatible with 6.0.1. After all, it was initially for 6.0.1, but held off for a while because it needed a couple more exploits. By the time they were found, Apple was already on the verge of releasing 6.1.

So if it's not for 6.0.1 at launch, just give them a day or so. They'll port it back. All the exploits being used work on both 6.0.1 and 6.1.

iOS 6.0 through 6.1 will be supported. :) (Source: planetbeing)

Apple usually doesn't patch up vulnerabilities that are exploited for jailbreaking quickly, unless they actually pose a threat. (e.g. JailbreakMe's exploits could be used by malicious websites to give unsuspecting users malware.) Even if they issue a hotfix, they usually leave the signing window open a little longer since they probably didn't go through much QA/QC testing.

Well, they didn't backport the 5.0.1 and 5.1.1 untethers to 5.0 and 5.1 (respectively). :P

Why is this? Where was it stated that OTA update wont work? When you say restore can I just make a backup and then restore that or no?

I cannot say for sure for your last part, but for the earlier part about the OTA update, the devs said so themselves. It's best to follow their advice.

Well, it may or may not work properly; planetbeing says that it won't be tested very well. It's still recommended to update or restore through iTunes.

And yes, restoring with a backup in iTunes will be fine. :)

Izen , if i jailbreak now on 4.2.1 will Cydia save all the required blobs for all firmwares ?
If you're still on 4.2.1, there is a tool called iFaith that will save the SHSH blobs for 4.2.1. It does not require a jailbreak. Still, you shouldn't worry much, I've got good news in my next post.

Jailbreak team evad3rs has officially announced its jailbreak software, evasi0n, will soon be released. As the website states, you'll need a computer (pretty much any Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux machine will do) to use the software, and it will jailbreak any iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad on any iOS revision from 6.0 to 6.1. The site notes that the team is currently polishing the GUI, which means all the exploits and core code should be done, and a private beta test is around the corner. For more specifics, hit up the website or any of the evad3rs on Twitter.

Alright so the program is called evasi0n.
Nice kickass name. Funny how almost all jailbreak tools have a number in it. Once it's released can you post a link. Don't wanna download the wrong one.

EDIT
Will the OP be updated?

EDIT2
Will evasi0n be compatible with Windows 7 Ultimate?

A link to the page is in my previous post, cleverly disguised as the name of the jailbreak tool. http://evasi0n.com/ It will be available here when it is released.
The OP will be updated in due time, probably shortly after evasi0n is publicly released.
Yes, it's Windows 7 compatible. It's also Windows XP and Vista compatible. The compatibility list is on the website, but if your computer is less than 12 years old, you're probably set.

I have a semi-tethered jailbreak on my iPhone 4 and I want to update to 6.1. I will lose my jailbreak if I update though, right? So how would I go about updating without losing my jailbreak?

And another question, do I have to unjailbreak my iphone and then rejailbreak it when the untethered release comes, or can I just go straight from a semi-tethered to an untethered jailbreak?
