I just created a video and corresponding article answering the biggest questions that I had (warning: I learn deep, and broad) when I was figuring out how to do GameSave Exploits:

TL;DR

1. Dig out, find, or purchase a compatible game (see list in article or gc-forever wiki)
2. Check for the game revision
   
3. Check for a GameSave Hack (see list) with no version info (ex: GW7E-0-00), or the version matching your game (ex: GW7E-0-00 or GALE-0-02)
4. Purchase (or create) a Hacked Game Save (Swiss Boot) Card (can be created on the other dolphin console, but can't be created on a computer*)
5. Load stuff on SD Gecko or SD2SP2
6. DO NOT play the game for which you have a gamesave (or risk destroying your Swiss Boot Card)
7. Win!

* this can be done with a Xilinx and much skill... but there's no affordable, lay-person way to do it today

Easiest way to get a hacked save game on your memory card is to use a Wii. That is how I have done it. Took me about 20 minutes to softmod the Wii and get the savegame on my memory card.
