Since the other infamous 3DS decapping scam project has seemingly fallen through, why doesn't the GBATemp community come together and try to get another one going?

We would need to find someone willing to sacrifice a 3DS/3DS XL, somewhere to get the chips decapped, and someone trusted to take donations for the decapping. Granted this is a lot to ask for, if we could pull it off, it would be greatly beneficial to the community.

It's a good idea, with a bit of help of everybody we could make it possible. The fact that one guy ran with the money, doesn't mean that decapping can't be possible. We just need someone to trust...

For anyone wondering what the point is:

Savegame encryption doesn't work properly for newer games in emunand. Also, new eshop titles are unusable on emunand due to encryption issues. Currently this only applies to US Youtube and Pokebank, but the list of unusable titles will surely grow - it may even include retail games in the future. If we can dump the boot ROM, we will have the keys required to fix both of these issues, and Nintendo won't be able to pull this crap again.

Alternatively, if firmware 7.1 can be hacked, these issues will be fixed. But, Nintendo might be able to do this again with newer firmwares. Anyway, people have been searching for new exploits for a while, and nothing seems to have been discovered yet.

That's my understanding, but I'm sure there are other potential uses for decapping.

Decapping does not work like the majority of people around here seem to think it does. It would not help do any of the things that it was said to.

The fact that the dude raised as much money as he did is a testament to the reason one of the first things they teach engineering students is to never use their technical knowledge to confuse or take advantage of people - because it's easy and works every time.

You are right, most fellows here think "decapping" is the holy grail for "rooting"/"hacking".

But if it included a careful delayering it might offer insight in how the keyscrambler works (assuming it is done in hardware) which would perhaps even allow it to be replicated by software.

You understand were not talking about some guy dremeling off the epoxy and reading silicium right ?
Decapping any proprietary chip has numerous applications, and its not like the fundrainer description promised much.
