In a gamebiz.jp article, it was confirmed that Comcept has officially closed its doors. Much of the original staff has been incorporated into developer Level-5's Osaka branch.
Founded by Keiji Inafune in 2010, the company made waves in the industry by promising a spiritual successor to Mega Man entitled Mighty No. 9. A Kickstarter was launched, and 67,226 backers pledged $3,845,170 USD. (The original goal was $900,000 USD.) The story took a dramatic turn when Keiji Inafune attempted to launch an entire brand off the wildly successful campaign. In addition, Inafune attempted to launch a Mega Man Legends successor by the name of Red Ash. When Mighty No. 9 failed to live up to customer expectations, Comcept quickly ran into problems, and even Red Ash's funding was mired in controversy. Comcept's legacy became a cautionary tale for creators wanting to part from the companies that made them famous in order to establish indie studios.
