uuuh. Beating the game = Getting to the end of it = getting an ending, 1 ending = beating it 1 time...? Or you could argue beating a game means doing everything, e.g getting all endings i guess.

    what?

Everyone has their own opinion on games. I personally think Chrono Trigger doesn't attract me at all. But, I can't judge it based on the graphics or cover.. I'm still going to try it as soon as I can put down my PSP's Final Fantasy Tactics.

Anyways, to respond to your post. Playing the game of its era affects how you think of the game majorly. It's true. I don't mean to criticize anyone here, but there are people who do not like Final Fantasy Tactics. Probably because they compare it to Disgaea. So, they find Tactics too slow, and the plot way too serious. But you have to look at the time period of which it was released too which influences people's decisions.

    FFTactics: 1997/98
    Disgaea: 2003

People exposed to Disgaea may not have been exposed to Tactics. So.. in the end, they probably don't like Tactics because it is slower and less deep in terms of customization and features. I love both series, but I definitely love Tactics more because it's one of the few type of games that I found different and unique. So.. basically this changed my point of view in games. I still love Tactics. I gave it a good score, but to others, probably don't think its worth what I gave it.

Its like how people like FFT Advance better than the original. I hope my post made sense. Anyways, it's the same with FF7. Some people think its overrated, but you gotta look at the time where it was released. It WAS one of the best games DURING its time. But now, it's considered over rated because there are so many games that can top it.

Not saying it isnt possible, but that had to be hard if you only went through 3 times. Especially the ending where you only have crono.

Of course it's possible. You can level up pretty quickly by going through Black Omen multiple times (by starting from the one in future and work backwards).

Once you reach level 55+ it's not that hard to get all the endings.

I completely agree with your post. Nostalgia largely affects how someone thinks about a game, too. A game being great for its time means that a lot of nostalgia is built up if you played that game when it was released. Nostalgia affects your judgment on a game, therefore not everyone will enjoy Chrono Trigger DS.

You could do that, but I just figure why not just go through it once and then play the entire game again? Thats just me though.

Ill go with nastolgic as well. I was playing this game when I was 13 years old when it came out. There was nothing like it. Chrono Trigger will pretty much be on any top lists for its genre by most of the gaming magazines when they have them. Just like FF7 will be as well, even though I dont care for the FF series.

I think it hits those who played it when it was on the most just simply b/c we were willing to indulge in the game much longer. I mean, the characters, song, and everything about the game was really remarkable. I think my least favorite character was that kat lady ayle or something, but you have a hero frog, danmsel in distress, a bad guy who is possibly a good guy, time travel...etc...This has to be a classic like FFVII or zelda ocarina of time, though it doesn't match up with today's standards of a good game; it is still marked in the hall of fame. So much packed into this game and brings back so much memories to those who actually played the game more than once [IMG]

I guess, all in all, even though this game may not match today's standards, how happy would you be if they ported FF VII onto the DS or something along that line? Yea, the graphics look a bit off to today's standards, the gameplay and story is still a classic ;D

This game was okay and Ocarina was bad in my opinion. I believe games should be reviewed by how good it is, not by how good the old one was.

everyones got an opinion and i wont knock it, but im looking forward to aces review.

im 21 and was apart of the chrono trigger, super mario rpg, and earthbound generation. this review is absolute blasphemy to someone like myself, but it makes sense to a new generation of players. i mean yeah there will be some new gamers who like these new ports they have never played before, but most of us who lived and enjoyed the generation chrono tigger came from will always appreciate it more.

on aces comment i will always appreciate the origional star wars. i mean what those movies have done were incredibly new to that time, but to the new viewers 15 and under it may not mean crap compared to the movies of this day and age. id like a review from both sides which is why i again will wait on aces, but i will no means ever knock chrono trigger, ocarina of time, legend of zelda link to the past, or any famous game of my generation, but at the same time i wont knock the view of someone of a newer generation. however, this review does make me a tad bit sad. its a shame that classic games held so dear are fading to a generation im starting to no longer understand, but the days of burning over 100 hours of gameplay on ffVII just dont have much meaning to a generation that could care less. luckily though for those of us who do care, square and other companies continue to make ports of games that alot of us enjoyed. my concluding example will be the FFtactics psp port. no FFtactics fan will tell me that they did not enjoy legitimately making a dark knight [IMG]

IMO I agree. I cant agree with overrated review shit.
The only game that isnt overrated and is really good is Zelda OoT, GTA IV and MGS.
At least they are not overrated.

Have to say, I'm having difficulty getting into it. I didn't play it at the time because I didn't have a SNES, tried and failed to get into it on an emulator and I can't say it's got me coming back much after 3 hours or so on the remake - it just seems a bit tired, the characters are flat and the story is beyond generic.

In opinions, there is no "sides", but what is important is your own opinion, and how you think about the game.
It's just like Tales of Innocence.
Many people were excited about this game, and people think this game is really well done.
However, some people that are more used to the 2D battles as the other Tales games can be disappointed.

Chrono Trigger works similarly - people who has played this during the SNES generation, the ones who've enjoyed the game and believed it to be epic will always like it no matter what.

But there are many new gamers that haven't even heard of Chrono Trigger before. Will they have the same opinion from the same perspective?

Probably not. That's what make game reviews from different views important - when seen from multiple perspectives, from the fanboys and the regular gamers, it gives a better overall sum about the game.

A Ys fan like me would want to praise every Ys game that has been made, but will be shamed to see one that is completely different from the original.
So if I write up a review about one of the Ys series, probably I wouldn't write too much negative stuff about it, trying to explain how epic the game is.
No matter how much I explain, there are still those people that prefers the MMORPG Ys Online with the 3D graphics and such, over the original Ys series.

That is where the division is formed, but hearing and accepting only one side of the division shouldn't be the only thing to use to determine how good the game is.

When some people try to buy electronics, they usually ask for both the pro's and con's. Just because the advertisements, fan reviews, and the official website says that it is an awesome electronic device, that shouldn't be the only thing you should see before getting it.

I know my analogies doesn't make sense, but there was a purpose for me to write up such a review.

Even I do feel like I kind of tried to 'attack' Chrono Trigger, but I actually put thought into it.

Probably because Chrono Trigger was never as famous in Korea, or probably I was playing to much Tales of Phantasia, Ys, Final Fantasy and the Shining Force series at that time, I just never totally liked Chrono Trigger as much as everybody else did.

But again, there is no "right" or "wrong" when it comes to opinions, so NOBODY here should start disagreeing with each other, nor should personally attack others.

If someone is saying, that a SNES-port (not a Remake -->would have loved that) should have voice acting it is just "wrong" and there is no opinion or something like that in this case... It is just wrong.

    EDIT
    scratch what I just said.

What I was trying to say right there was that, well, there was no voice acting.
I mean - it's a review. I'm trying to basically look at all parts of the game.
I mean- it's a port, right? But does it have voice acting? well, no.
Does everybody know this fact? No.
So what's the reason behind why I can't say that the game doesn't have any voice acting?

No basically what I said was, that you can`t criticize a IMO rightly beloved game from the past because of things it couldn`t accomplish because of the possibilities that the developer had back then. If we would talk about a Remake, I could understand that but like this to expect something like voice acting, as stated before, in a SNES-Remake is just wrong and don`t think, that there is any question about that!

    read my edited post.
I didn't criticize, I was pointing out a fact. I hope I am allowed to write up facts about the game in a review :|
I didn't deduct any points from it anyways.

Just a heads up everyone who cares, the review is coming along nicely. It's probably 3/4 done, and it's the longest thing I've ever written. It's probably the most in-depth review you'll ever read. Because of the length of it I'll be putting a handy clickable shortcut menu at the top that can take you to each section so you can skip that which you don't care about, read at your own pace, and just generally be able to navigate it without reading the whole thing.

See. He's obsessed with this game. If you speak badly of it, if you even get a single word of a quote wrong he goes off on ya. Now he's writing a god damn business-class essay about this. Look what you've all done!? brb hiding from massive wall of text.
