Depends how much you wanna spend. The new Pokemon games are out, Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee for the Nintendo Switch. If they're into stuff like Hot Wheels they have heaps of 50th anniversary cars out.

If he's already got some kind of 3ds/2ds no, unless you are or he is intending to hack it. It is at the end of its lifespan so unless he really wants to play quite a few games from its library you're better off to go with Switch games.
