A friend of mine has an sp which has problems with charging the battery. I think it's a connector problem, but I can't open his gba in the next two weeks and he needs to charge the battery immediately. Is there a way to charge the battery externally, maybe with some third party hardware?

Remember - do not ever apply a charger directly to the battery. This will cause a violent fire which can not be extinguished by water.

The battery can only be charged through the GBA itself, as it contains an internal over-charge protection circuit. Repair/replace the charger port on the GBA or get a new one. This is the only way.

You can use this battery charger:

But as already mentioned, better use the original way to charge the SP battery.
