I recieved a download for Cave Story+ last night, but after starting it up, I found the aspect ratio to be incorrect (black bars on either side of the game) in both fullscreen and windowed mode, and having the smaller of the two aspect ratios is annoying as it'll only take up one corner of the screen. After asking a couple of friends, it appears they have the same trouble as I do, so it's not any kind of problem with my screen.

Nothing I've done changes the fact that the game refuses to take up the full screen. Is there anything I can do?

Like Rydian said, having a game not meant to run in widescreen run in widescreen can cause graphical oddities.
An example:

Notice the door?

just face the fact that game isn't meant to be run widescreen.

and why in the world would you stretch it? you people probably bought full screen dvds because you thought it was better. and i bet you still watch those on your HDTV's with the image stretched. just enjoy the game in its full-screen resolution glory. it isn't detracting from anything.

Cave Story was originally programmed for 4:3 displays, and Cave Story + wasn't changed that much.

That being said, depending on how Pixel coded the game, somehow forcing widescreen would either work flawlessly or heavily glitched. No gray area.

As the PSP port showed, it's possible with minor glitches (that should be easily fixed if the scripts can be edited).

No clue why the PC version lacks a widescreen option, most likely just standard laziness. I mean hell, look at the state the first US release for the Wii was in.

Look at my post a few posts above from yours.
It shows a perfect example of a gray area.
