It's been more than 15 years I haven't checked what's going on with Wii modding. Been using CFG USB loader v7x with a forwarder channel, external spinning hard drive formatted as wbfs, ran Hackmii and Bootmii, installed some cIOS, etc.

All running good until the external hard drive finally dead. Want to know if we are blessed with some modern way to load backup now? The external one is bulky so don't want to go with that again, thinking the most streamlined solution: to load from the internal SD slot, or an usb thumb stick adaptor for micro sd at the back port for the least.

Any step by step pointers are very much appreciated if that can be done. Thanks heaps, love the community!

Yeah, now USB Loaders, both "GX" and "CFG" versions can load from FAT32 SD/USB/HDD.

Simply search for their official Github pages to get the latest version of each.
I personally prefer CFG (always have... never had issues) and about cIOS, I haven't updated mine since 2012, (still my Wii works perfectly) so I haven't had any reasons to "update".

WBFS formatted drives are absolutely no longer required, but WBFS is the extension you must use for your legally obtained backups.

About step by step guides, don't be lazy, it's not too difficult to format properly your whatever drive/device you want and copy paste your games... literally a two step process.

BTW if you care about "What's been going on recently"... the answer is Drama, software pirates acting like they're shocked at stolen code, whatever... it's not like... the Wii needs more "updates". ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thank both of you! That's really a great news to be able to use the internal sd card slot. Too good to be true, is there any pros and cons in using it, like loading speed, max storage size it can support etc. I have a 256GB micro sd, I hope thats supported.

And looks like this GX is still actively developing than CFG? How would you compare them?

Yeah... pros and cons of using SDs as main backup loaders (and this is from my personal experience)... SDs dies faster than HDDs.

My 64GB SD only lasted like 3 years before it totally stopped working. I assume wear and tear, but then a week after it also happened to a 32GB SD card.
So be careful, don't be using expensive SD cards because they don't last!

PLEASE DON'T NECROBUMP!

About CFG vs GX... like I said, I haven't updated anything in my Wii for over a decade (with the exception of PriiLoader! and apps of course) but when it comes to cIOS, I literally stopped because my Wii works just fine.

When I tried the GX Loader, I had troubles with a handful of Wii games (loaded to black screens) and if I had posted a thread asking for help, the obvious "solution" I would've been prompted would've been: "pOst a SysChEcK" and "uPdAte yOur cIoS"... then I went back to CFG and voilà, problems "fixed themselves ".

By this I'm not saying that one is better than the other, just that they're very different, and if you have problems with certain backups, don't immediately assume it's because you need to "uPdAte yOur cIoS" when it's probably the loader itself... which is why I haven't changed CFG for nothing else since 2012.

In this sense, try both versions, they offer a lot of new improvement features, just pick whichever you want.
Also, I dare you find a thread saying: "CFG USB LOADER WON'T WORK!" or something along the lines.
Most people dislikes it because "looks ugly", but the thing fricking works with literally anything and everything I've thrown to my Wii.
USB? Yes.
Thumbdrives/Thumbsticks? Yes.
SD Cards? Yes.
HDDs i find in the flea market for less than a dollar? Yes.
SSDs? Yes
