Format it to fat32 with 32kb clusters. You will need a program to do such as most computers do not do this natively.

And as for brands it's really up to what you wanna get.
Is there a difference between brands?

Different manufacturers? Lol

But in all seriousness I honestly have no idea. Some people say that some brands are better than other brands. Some swear that the brand they have is the best. My opinion is just that some people have a particular favorite that seems to work better.

Just stick to the main name brand cards and you can't go wrong. Except for the occasional bad card like you seem to have gotten, but hey, it happens sometimes.

its bloody rare depending Where your store gets it stock but Some fakes do make it in retail supplies that or they got a bad batch. see if they'll take this one back explain the situation that yoru trying to just Format use w/ the 3DS and its still not working. and try somewhere else, if you were in the states, i'd of Suggested Microcenter (i've had no issues w/ thier storebranded SD Cards.) if at worse could try ordering online from Tiger direct (i belive the ship globally) i know Newegg does. but best of luck getting a Usable SD Card!

Hay!
So I returned that goddamn sd card to the store, went to another store and bought a Kingston 32 GB SDHC.
Working like a charm!

i though the 3ds coudn't read xc cards...
The 3DS can read SDXC cards (exFAT) only if you format them to FAT32 before.
GUIFormat for example can do this because the default Windows formatter does not allow formatting an SDXC to FAT32.
