I have an Xbox LIVE account. For some time, there have been certain friends I can join in xbox live parties and there have always been others that I can never join. Its infuriating because I pay for this service and it cant deliver me into a simple chatting environment with my friends.

My NAT type is open, even if its the lowest connection rate. Suggestions? Im getting pretty pissed about all this.

I'd replace the router..
Could be that the model is just borked or unsupported or whatever.

Seeing that you prolly portforwarded everything and assigned a static IP to your 360.
Replacing the router is the next suggestion ;p

Did you forward any ports or by default is your router have an open NAT? Also, could be your friend's connection and not yours as well.

My router is a vanilla linsys with no altered settings at all, not even a password (no one lives within a mile). I have an open NAT by default.

I know it could be his... he games from a Verizon 4G hotspot... his phone :c

If you are having issues with that one friend only then its his connection. I also game on Verizon 4G, I use to use my phone then a jetpack and now Verizon's 4G LTE homefusion router. Phones & Jetpacks are double NAT and there is no way for your friend to open it, it will always be moderate or strict. One thing you could do is to forward ports 88 UDP and 3074 UCP & UDP or if you want the easier way you could just add your Xbox's IP to DMZ. Before you do that you need to set your Xbox's IP as a static IP or it could possibly change and your DMZ or ports will be useless.

Yeah I had an issue the same as this a few years back and I tried everything. Turned out it wasnt me but my old man on his xbox! If he was in a party with anyone else on my list, I couldnt join. The only way I found this out was by trying start a party with my friends one by one until I figured out it was him that was causing the issues. I then got him to join a party with one of my friends who I could join, then I tried to join and it wouldnt let me. Problem solved. I went round, changed his router settings and voila.

Has this problem been solved?

No, my guess is the most of the problem comes from my friend playing behind a moderate NAT thanks to the way he connects. He cant get regular internet so his home gets satellite internet from Verizon. That's too slow to game from, so he tethers from his phone to get a decent ping.

Verizon doesn't offer satellite its wireless internet to the cell towers. Satellite has a ping of 500ms-1000ms which impossible to game on but Verizon 4G LTE (not 3g) has great pings anywhere from 30ms to 80ms which DL speeds of like 15mbps to 25mbps. But, since he is using his cell phone as a mobile hotspot he will be double NATed and Verizon does not allow port forwarding or even DMZ from a phone or mobile hotspot. If the account from Verizon is in his name then you should tell him to get Verizon 4G LTE Homefusion plan (which is what i use since I can't have anything else where I live), he will get more data, faster speeds, better pings and he won't be double NATed and will be able to portforward.

Heres my Verizon 4G Homefusion results:

I wasn't trying to insult anyone, I have the same problem where I live. At first Verizon only offered 3G which was playable for online gaming but laggy as hell, then I got a mobile hotspot jetpack from Verizon which helped a little but for 2 years I had to deal with slow speeds and was at a huge disadvantage at games like CoD & Halo. But with 4G I got the homefusion setup and they give me a router and now I can play online with no lag and with an open NAT. I'm just trying to help you help your friend.

No no haha I wasnt taking offense haha.

No i understand, and I am thankful for your help haha. It seems like its a location issue. I know its not money, hes like made of it. I think he offered Verizon funds to run him a direct line, but they wouldn't do it.

This isn't a landline, its actually the same internet you get from a cell tower. Homefusion is a external antenna that attaches to the side of your house and connects to a wireless router (which is provided with the plan). If Verizon 4G LTE is in your area you can have Homefusion. So, if he uses his Verizon phone to get 4G hotspot to his Xbox this is the same thing but faster, stronger with an open NAT and doesn't require and fiber optic cabling etc.

I am forced to use Homefusion and I love it, provides me with all the stuff to game on. Heres the speeds I get using my Homefusion. Here are some pics of how it works.
