Using PSNLover 1.2, game.txt and vsh.txt both have the prx(?) line enabled... running 5.50 prometheus.
when i try to log in it gives me the message "A system software update for the PSP system is required. For update methods, refer to the instructions for the PSP system."

I've heard PSN doesn't work at all for any firmware under 6.00.

I understand your saves may get screwed up if you upgrade, but I have zero issue using PSN on 6.60 PRO B10 without using any additional plugins.

Yeah AFAIK PSNLover stopped development for 5.x (just like PROME did, joining PRO).

If your saves do end up getting corrupt, fix it with magicsave.
