Gaming Can someone explain why there are 2 Minecrafts?

i would try to buy the minecraft switch edition.
the price is the same!

but you get the minecraft switch edition and for free the New Minecraft bedrock edition.
and some mash ups are for the old edition cheaper then in bedrock and they will be transfered to the new edition.
both can be installed on the switch at same time.

The one that is released currently is known as the "Console Edition", that originally released on the Xbox 360, and has since been ported to many other platforms e.g. the switch. This version is getting more outdated as the days go by and was recently announced to be being discontinued. The second version is known as the "Bedrock Edition", that originally released on Mobile. It is a version of the game that has many upgrades to the console edition, for example: servers and cross platform play. It has been ported to Windows 10, Xbox One, and now the Switch.

If you wanted to buy Minecraft on the Switch, then I would do it before the new version releases because you would get to have the old Console Edition, and the new Bedrock Edition (which people with the previous version get free).

You get the new version in addition to getting to keep the old version? Or do they replace the old version with the new version. What benefits, if any, does the old version have over the new one? Is everything that was in the old version available in the Bedrock edition?

Windows 10, Pocket Edition and Switch Edition don't exist anymore. They are now just Minecraft. Java Edition is the one besides PS4 Edition to keep it in their name

physical is just digital 1's and 0's written to a cart (or disc, depending on the system) there are no non-digital games on any mainstream system.
