I bought a Falcon model 360 earlier for £1. Not even joking, it was from a job lot and he wanted them off his hands. I thought for a quid it didn't matter.

Here's what's wrong with it. It has the RRoD but in a strange way someone might know. I haven't opened it (yet) but it's obviously been opened before. I turn it on and it makes a huge buzzing sound, before going RRoD. 3 red rings by the way.

Possible to fix or dump it?

Boot it and hold the sync button,
Then press the eject button 4 times and it'll tell you what error code it has.

I'd say to fix it definitely, a reball is needed (which is around 50 quid)

Thought as much. I didn't check the error code yet but in any case it needs reballing. I managed to choke it into life by changing the thermal paste (the old stuff was literally rock hard, probably part of the problem) and checked the dashboard revision. It's got an older dash, one of the NXE dashboards. It's probably been sitting around since it RRODed and some idiot tried to open it but didn't really do anything as I can see. Having HDMI on the console is a plus, so I wanted to keep this one. What do you think are the best options for hacking this console providing I get it working permanently?

If it's above 8xxx, RGH, below 8xxx (unlikely) JTAG.

Only permanent solution really is to reball the thing, otherwise it'll just fail again in a day/week/month.

Is it possible to do that myself, or a professional company would be better?

Unless you got a reball station, it's impossible to do yourself.
Reflowing can be done at home but it'll just cause more damage, nor is it a permanent solution.

Well, there has been almost one decade already since the X360 began production and the RRoD thing should be already something anecdotic that people have long figured out.
So, I would ask, do someone know why was Microsoft's BGA production/ensambling quality so bad?
Is there any article in this aspect? Because it seriously was awful beyond comparison for a big brand.

Unfortunately not.

Cause the EU banned the use of leaded solder.
Tin solderballs are more brittle and don't expand/cool down as much as the lead/tin solderballs.

Balls. How can I get it reballed without spending loads on shipping? I'm thinking at this point I should just stop being cheap and buy a new model.

Stop being cheap and buying a newer console is indeed an option ;p
Other then that, shipping and paying for reballing is the other.

There's no reliable fix otherwise.
Only temporarily ones.

What's the cheapest hack to do on something like a slim model, to play backups?

RGH.
If you got an early Slim model then you could get an Xkey (which allows you to play on Live)
Xkey is roughly 80 quid, DVD dumping can be done for free, if you got the proper SATA chipset.

@Xdqwerty No you heard wrong, and don't believe till you experience yourself. Fallout 4 is one of my favorite games of all time. Yes it had issues early on, esp with older hardware like the xbox1, but it is awesome, esp now being 4k on Series S/X or PS5

@BigOnYa, Then i think people were talking about fallout 76

    that one was buggy too
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Yea you right there, fallout 76 was a letdown, but it not that bad now, they have fixed slot of issues they had at launch. Biggest issue with Fallout 76 is its a pay to advance further type of game, which sucks
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
