Can you do this? Are there risks, any programs I may have installed that can cause issues? Might I be forced to system update? I want to just buy sonic 4, but I have a softmodded wii. Do I need to find the wad and install it that way?

Did you install any VC/Wiiware game using wad? If so you might want to remove them before going online through Shop Channel.
