I'm going to buy a PSP, and naturaly one that can run the custom firmware.
Ive found a few brand new blue Madden boxes and red God of war boxes.

Which one is the better one to get?
I read the sticky and it mentions some blue ones can't be modded. How common is this?
I'd prefer to get the blue one (if only because the red ones so blasted ugly imho)

Nope it's a gamble with the Madden PSP's as to my knowledge they all have the same box codes. However the GoW PSP is definitely moddable, and personally i'd have that over the Madden Blue any day of the week.

I heard that the GoW PSP can have the casing replaced but the power switch won't agree with it. By that I mean it will get stuck because the power switch is slightly more bulky than the others

D`oh!

As per the Stickied PSP FAQ

Is there a way to tell which motherboard the PSP has by just looking at the packaging?
Lucky for you, there is. This will help you judge what version the PSP is by looking at the retail box. Some of it is still not absolute, so buyer beware... but this is all the information known at the present. It's separated
by the package style:

PSP-2000 Motherboard Information:
TA-85 (Can use and make Pandora Battery)
TA-85v2 (Can use, but cannot make Pandora Battery)
TA-88v2 (Can use, but cannot make Pandora Battery)
TA-88v3 (Cannot use or make Pandora Battery)

Limited Edition & New Boxstyle:
Daxter Limited Edition Pack (TA-85v2/3.71 OFW)(CONFIRMED)
God of War Limited Edition Pack (TA-88v2/3.95 OFW)(CONFIRMED)
Madden 09 Limited Edition Pack (TA-88v2/3.95 OFW & TA-88v3/4.01 OFW)(CONFIRMED)
Piano Black with the New Box Style (TA-88v3)(UNCONFIRMED)
Piano Black (Amazon.com)(TA-88v3)(PARTIALLY CONFIRMED)

PSP-2000 Original Boxstyle Box Codes (Thanks to Alek @ Dark-AleX.org):
(No Letter) = 3.60
A = 3.71
B = UNKNOWN
C = 3.72
D = UNKNOWN
E = 3.80
F = 3.90
G = 3.95 / 4.01 (TA-88v2 / TA-88v3) BUT
A PSP with G and the 4.01 firmware is most likely a TA-88v3 motherboard, so it is advised that you stay away from them.

And, how pray tell, does that help when the Madden PSP's all come in the boxes with code G? As i said it's a gamble with that run of PSP's and that list isn't helpful in this instance.

I was agreed that you were right and it's better to get the ugly red psp in post 5
I posted that to help advise clubecgr on which 2000 models can't be modded

Get the Madden one if you prefer the color, as replacing the housing is much more of a gamble, since it voids your warranty.

If you get the wrong motherboard, just return it.

I check the return policy first.
"CD's, DVD's, Video Game Consoles, Accessories and Zunes:
Unopened, presented within 21 days of purchase date on original sales receipt and all original content packaging, may be exchanged or refunded.
Unopened, presented within 21 days of purchase date on gift receipt, may be exchanged or issued HMV gift card for value.
Defective games or consoles returned within 7 days of date of purchase, will all original content packagine will be exchanged for identical replacement item.
Opened products that are not defective are not returnable. "

what kind of crappy store is that. when i bought my psp it had one of the newer motherboards so i just brought it back for a refund

TA-088v3 is a death wish. It is VERY hard to find a non v3. Everyone knows cfw doesn't work on v3 and there is a rush to obtain one. I have recently obtained 600 bucks and was looking for a psp. I know about v3 and instead of Gamestop I tried eBay and amazon. The only ones you find are piano black. But i was looking for a silver edition so i could use the stock buttons with my clear shell. Seems they are going over their true value in bids. If you really would like a psp i suggest doing these steps.
  • But from eBay
  • Ask seller to look at box
  • ask seller is they know about cfw
  • get a silver edition *you can get new shell from DE*
  • New ones are risky, but still you don't want it to be scratched up

Well I went to HMV and picked up the red GoW one
and truthfully I feel a little foolish, the red wasn't as bad as I expected.
Sure It isn't the greatest, but the pictures I saw online made it look like bright red cheap plastic.
However it's a half-way decent dark red.

so all in all, I'm loving the custom firmware, and the the colour isn't making me clench everything I pick it up.

Lots of HMV's still seem to have stock of red, blue, and even a few white ones in obscure places.
Within walking distance of my work there are 2 stores, 1 had a single madden, and the other had 3 GoW.

Thanks for the kick in the butt and say "just get the red", it proved to be sage advice
