My first PSP (1.50 or whatever homebrew runs on) broke around Christmas time last year. Never bothered sending a repair; bought a new one, intended on making it the one I upgrade, and eventually repairing the other so I could have one homebrew and one standard.
To the point, I was playing a game today and the game hung. Like the disc was scratched or something. Strange, since I took the game out of the case the hour I bought it, put it in my PSP, and never took it out. Ever. Rebooted the PSP, the loading screen hung too. That is, until I popped the disc out. Tried several other UMDs and none of them worked. A quick search on the internets told me that my lens was probably broken. Quite irate about it, since it's less than a year old, I took absolutely perfect care of it, and it breaks anyway.
I read that Sony charges about $120 for a lens replacement. For that price I might as well buy a third PSP. The device should still be under warranty, but as I probably threw the receipt away, I have no proof.
Now I guess my question is about homebrew. Been out of that scene for a while so I'm not too keen on what can and cannot be done on what model PSPs. From what I understood with my last [homebrew] PSP is that to play games off the memory stick I still needed a UMD in the device for it to read. If I were to downgrade this PSP, with its broken lens, would I still be able to do that?
Furthermore, I'm not sure if I can downgrade my model of PSP. Again, last I heard, the TA-082 (I think that's what it was called) PSP could not be downgraded without bricking the device.
Thank you.
