I hope they do pass and enforce copyright laws, harshly. It means I'll be too scared to pirate games and movies and therefore play and watch fewer games and movies and therefore spend more of my time doing things worthwhile.

Very compelling...maybe I could finally shake my case of 'Pirate's Syndrome'.

Seriously though, it's not the fact that piracy would be outright banned, it's the fact that we would lose all virtual privacy. It's kind of scary to imagine someone watching everything you do online and maybe even looking inside of your computer and what not for info.

What does Bill C-61 mean to Canadians?
Specifically, it includes measures that would:
-expressly allow you to record TV shows for later viewing; copy legally purchased music onto other devices, such as MP3 players or cell phones; make back-up copies of legally purchased books, newspapers, videocassettes and photographs onto devices you own; and limit the "statutory damages" a court could award for all private use copyright infringements;
-implement new rights and protections for copyright holders, tailored to the Internet, to encourage participation in the online economy, as well as stronger legal remedies to address Internet piracy;
-clarify the roles and responsibilities of Internet Service Providers related to the copyright content flowing over their network facilities; and
-provide photographers with the same rights as other creators.

What Bill C-61 does not do:
-it would not empower border agents to seize your iPod or laptop at border crossings, contrary to recent public speculation

What this Bill is not:
-it is not a mirror image of U.S. copyright laws. Our Bill is made-in-Canada with different exceptions for educators, consumers and others and brings us into line with more than 60 countries including Japan, France, Germany and Australia

I'm not caring about the bill anymore either. I just overreacted from the first time. I just hope I don't get charged for buying flashcarts and modchips online. I don't mean by the ISP.. but if the mailman happens to know it's illegal, if the bill gets passed.

I just read over the letter...it basically would allow us to throttle your torrent downloads which both of the major ISPs around here do anyways...its just you don't feel them hard yet.

Well, depending on the internet package you subscribe to with Rogers, you get a limit on how many gigs of stuff you can download. Go over that limit and be charged per gig.

I think you have "free ride" confused with "free dom." To quote myself in case you missed it...
myselfWhat gets me the most, is in none of this have I ever seen any form of an apology for the tax we now pay on media and information as to why it isn't sufficient (since that whole idea is obviously so flawed the laws apparently need to be changed as well.) I think they are counting on most ignoring this fact and continuing to collect that revenue.

That $20 spindle of disks has always cost me $23.99 because of such additional hidden fees that were added on to "offset losses due to piracy" and are already being paid to whomever they agreed to pay it to (in my eyes to basically avoid criminalizing private citizens.) Not much free about that if you ask me, since Canadians have all been paying for it for years.

The unfortunate thing is, most people don't seem to realize canada's piracy laws work as they are and have always been enforced - just very rarely against private individuals when the business suing them has no tangible evidence (aka: search and seizure currently requires a judge and proof rather than ass-backwards self contradictory laws that takes power away from the legal system and privacy away from citizens} as they are currently doing in the USA. Many counterfeiters have been put on the {cell} block.

Welcome to the real reality. It's not so much about getting things for free that are copyrighted (piracy will still exist long after people start going to jail) as it is forcing your citizens, by law, to bend over and take it up the wazoo for anyone with enough dollars to do so.

Bill C-60 was shot down before. Anyway, this will be BS if it passes. The bill would also stop people from making things like AMVs and music videos. Man, schools still have courses that teach kids how to do this stuff. They'd be stumping creativity just so they can have people to nail a few lawsuits to.

Thats why austrailas good with the piracy sort of thing, heck we even had a law passed a few years back making modchips legal (as long as they allow you to play imported games) although this might have only been with ps2's though.
