Gaming Borderlands help!

Okay, so I got a copy of Borderlands off one of my friends (DL'd of course, otherwise I probably wouldn't be having this problem) so we could play online and do quests/etc.
Only problem is, well, this:

All the in-game text is []'s! And I have no-idea what's causing it. Any assistance and suggestions will be appreciated.

reinstall. i had problems like this with my copy as well, turns out something happened during installation.

Well, I don't have the disc. Got it off a friends HDD you see. There was a text file that I followed that had something to do with editing the registry though...
