Can someone give me the pro's and con's of these applications. I am trying to figure out which one I should use.

Some of the things I want to do is to be able to boot directly into HBC. I'm really a noob when it comes to this stuff... so go easy on me. I see some of the customized wii menus out there as well... and I am trying to figure out how to do this as well. I have looked at troythe zombies and crazy intro's... any suggestions?

BootMii "in my opinion is the best fail safe for a brick" if you can install it to Boot2.
BootMii can make a NAND back up witch can fully restore you're from most if not all bricks.

Pre Loader is mainly for hacks but dose supply some brick protection..
You can boot straight to HBC with Pre Loader.

If you are in to Custom Menu Themes I use SoftMii Tweak Toy you can get it with SoftMii..
BE SURE TO INSTALL BOOTMII AND OR PRE LOADER, CHANGING SYSTEM MENU THEMES CAN BRICK A WII.

Use both, bootmii+ NAND dump for brick-proofing, and preloader for the hacks

Which one do you install first? I thought both of these applications were installed before the wii boot?

bootmii installs very early in the Wii startup process. This offers awesome brick protection.
preloader installs later into the startup process. It just takes the place of the system menu and moves it.

Bootmii vs Preloader is a REALLY dumb question to be asking, I would avoid touching either until I at least understand them if I were you.

I have both.

Fresh juicy apples VS 1988 Ford Escort... best type of clothing ??

Both.
Bootmii ---> for NAND backup and brick protection
Preloader ---> Hacks

But I leave the bootmii files on my pc so I have to run bootmii only when it's needed.

its not a stupid question.. personally i have bootmii and am waiting on installing preloader because i'm hoping bootmii (or something that can be uninstalled) will be able to add these hacks e.g. booting straight into my loader. should i give up and install preloader or wait and see what comes out?

It IS a stupid question because of the ....... VS

They are not the same, they both do different things, so you can't say one VS the other.

EG:

If I want to copy "non copy saves" Bootmii is absolutely RUBBISH ! ! ! Preloaders WINS

If you want to back up your NAND Preloader is RUBBISH ! ! ! Bootmii WINS

Either could WIN in a VS comparison based on what you want (they are totally different)

It would be like comparing a WiiMote VS SD Card... which is best ? ? ?
Either could win again....

You can't control Mario with SD cards, and you can't copy a save to Wiimote.

You need both to have the best of both worlds.

The topic saying "VS" makes it dumb...end of.. also arguing with facts is kinda, well dumb.

If you want to do what one of them does, then that's the BEST. If you want to do what the other does then that's the BEST, imho both for more options. Why have them compete ?

Preloader is unnecessary.

If you want brick protection and/or NAND backup, use BootMii installed into Boot2. Make sure to actually do a NAND backup or you're not really getting any brick protection.

Use StartPatch 4.04 or higher for hacks. You only "install" it as a HBC program, it's not an installed channel, but it can do the same system hacks.

This way, you have only ONE thing installed low-level system wise instead of two (better IMO).

So to recap: BootMii in Boot2, StartPatch for system hacks.

You can repair IOS's and Systemmenu using cBoot2 Wad Manager that runs off Bootmii.

There are more hacks for Preloader than StarPatch.

Something else to fall back on Preloader if your SD card isn't working?
So to recap: BootMii in Boot2, StartPatch for system hacks.

Slimmmmmm, way to miss the point of what the OP was asking.

Hooya, i have system 3.2E, can i use StartPatch? Is there likely to be a new version of preloader or something with equivalent hacks? i only really want to skip the health warning and be able to boot a particular homebrow app (my usb loader).

thanks.

Use Preloader 0.29, you can then install usb loader dol and auto boot to it. I have tried Starfall on 3.2E and StarPatch on 4.0E and i have gone back to Preloader.

thanks, the idea of messing with the original system menu, just makes me nervous though - is there anything i can backup first to let me uninstall preloader later? or is there any way for bootmii or HBC to load a particular app at startup? would nice to do it just with bootmii and not have to mess with original system menu.

Well if you can install bootmii as boot2 and do a nand dump first you cant do any better than that.
Preloader takes about 4 seconds to install, bootmii boot2 takea about 1.5 seconds, and as long as you dont get a power cut you should be ok. What systemmenu version are you on and do you plan on changing it?

No I never "missed the point".
He titles the topic name as a comparison by using VS. I fully understand what that means, he also then continues by asking which ONE he should have.

I suggest both for their own unique advantages.

To compare them IS dumb.
