Homebrew boot9strap on Gateway modded N3DSXL?

Hi,

I have a Japanese New 3DSXL here that has the Gateway exploit installed. Original SysNAND is at 11.2.0-35J. I would like to install boot9strap on it, via safehax as outlined on 3ds.guide, but find that safehax hangs on a black screen every time. I've tried most things I think, going back to safehax r19, with game cartridge and without, and re-checked that everything is in place on the SD as it should, etc.etc. Maybe you guys can help me with the following questions:

• can this be due to the installed Gateway exploit? If so, how can I remove it?
  I bought the DS with the exploit installed...
  
• if not, what else could I try?
• would using hardmod be a solution? I know how to solder.

What is "gateway exploit", how do you launch gateway mode right now?

Switch on and hold "down"... if I understand things right, this uses the installed exploit to boot into EmuNAND. (?)
