Eject any cartridges you're not using, and turn down the backlight. Speakers probably use more battery than headphones, though using no sound at all will use up the least amount of power.

on max Bright/ Sound = 2.5-3.5 hours
Low bright/ no sound = 10-12 hours

Yeah, 8 hours on average is what I get on no sound and on lowest brightness. Note my DS is over a year old and bought 2nd hand.

They use more juice but only 10-15 minutes difference in power. But that is only for slot-1 cards. I know that running cards from slot-2 will drain the power faster

Also, games like EBA or others that use the touch screen a lot will run out of power faster as well.

If you have a phat DS, Datel sells (or used to sell) a battery expansion pack. I picked one up at Best Buy a couple years back for about $5. It adds a bit more to the DS, but mine runs well past 8 hours on a single charge which includes using a flash cart: Supercard SD and a Supercard DSONE

If you play your DS while it's charging it drains the battery like hell.
